Yesterday we drove from Swansea back to Hobart via Bonarong Animal Sanctuary, a rehabilitation centre for marsupials that survive road accidents. We were able to hand feed kangaroos and watched Tasmanian devils being fed a wallaby leg! Also saw wombats, emus and koalas. Then drove into Hobart and visited MONA (museum of old and new art). Tom had already been here a few months ago on a work related jolly so was keen for us to experience the place. It's an art gallery where some of the exhibits were understandable but mostly they were 'artwank' a wonderful word that sums up a lot of modern art. Anyway it was thought provoking.... This morning we set off for Port Arthur, stopping on the way for breakfast with a difference! This crazy cafe produced lovely food, Sarah ordered fruit muesli and was presented with just that but in the style of a knickerbocker glory. See photo. Port Arthur is now a big tourist attraction but was a notorious penal colony 94 kms south of Hobart. It was a prison for transported British felons from 1830 to 1890 when the practice stopped. Many of the buildings were partially destroyed in forest fires soon after then but have now been partially restored to give an idea of what life was like for the prisoners, the guards and their families during its heyday. We went on a tour of the bay where the sailing ships would have accessed the area (no roads until 1932) and saw the 'Island of the dead' where the all those who died at Port Arthur were buried.
