Around the world with Annie
My first day in Japer has been good. I joined a group to hike up Mount Edith Cavell. 5200 feet. the scenery was spectacular. The trail we were hiking upon has only been opened in the last two weeks. The paths have been closed to protect the apline vegetation. All the flowers are in bloom. Its a beautiful sight.
The glaciers facinated me because its the first time I have seen anything like it. I have taken a lot of pictures of the angel glacier. The glacial lake has cliffs of ice surrounding it. There is a cave but people are not permitted to have a look. However, people still do. The ice is particularly unstable at the moment because the there's been an large ice melt over the last few days. I have a deep respect for the glaciers and the surrounding mountains because they tower over you and are unpredicable. It the top of 5200 feet, it started hailing so we decided to decent. We saw sun, rain and hail all in a space of 15 mins. It is not a place for the light hearted or the fickle folk.
Mount Edith Cavell is named after an english nurse who helped allied troops escape behind enemey lines in the first world war. She saved many troops but was found and executed in 1915. She also has a beautiful lake named after.
After our hike we stopped off at Athabasca Falls. The river has carved a small canyon through the rock. It's beautiful.
We are planning to hire a car tomorrow and go exploring in and around the Japser area.
So until then, be good.
Lots of Love Annie
