Got up at 7.30, got ready and was out by 8. The bus was supposed to arrive at 8 so we still had half an hour to spare as its always late. We are still both so sick! I hate it!
So we took a leisurely stroll to the pharmacy who now know us on a first name basis! I'm not sure if this is a good thing though? Michael now has tonsillitis so we got him some drugs for that! He has to take 3 tablets 3 times a day plus a malaria tablet and he also takes paracetamol! I tell him off though!
We don't usually do tours as we like to do it ourselves to save money and spend as much time as we want everywhere but as we have been sick we don't have the time and have to do it all in one day!
Got picked up at 8.30, drove for half an hour and the first place we went was The Old Citadel. This is a former imperial city but was heavily bombed by the Americans. It has a moat surrounding it with a 6m high wall thats 2.5 km long and construction began in 1804.
We then drove to the Garden House at 10.30. There are many garden houses in Vietnam but most of them are destroyed. It's a place where family or distant family of royalty live. The houses cannot be sold outside of the family but as generations pass its more likely they will because land value has gone up and the houses are worth a lot.
We then drove to a village where incense sticks and conical hats are made. Incense sticks are made from mixing saw dust, cinnamon, water and spice together into a play dough looking mixture. You take a bamboo stick and role this mixture around it then leave it in the sun to dry.
Conical hats are the hats that look like triangle cone hats that Asians wear. I think they are on the HSBC advert. They are made with a frame, then wrap banana leaf around it, cut newspaper into a pretty pattern and stick it around it then another layer of banana leaf. This is so you can't see the newspaper but when the sun shines through you can see the patterns.
We got back on the bus and went to Tu Duc Tomb. This is where the emperor Tu Duc was laid to rest, it is not just a tomb it's a complex that takes half an hour to walk around! It has huge steps, a lake, different temples and massive gardens. We got a bit lost and couldnt find the actual tomb! We got pointed where to go until we found it! I pretended to be a zombie rising from the dead, but that's a different story! ;) we did get real Tyra about getting lost though so we made the most of it!
We then got taken to a cheap restaurant where lunch was provided. I ate baked fish, tofu, rice, morning glory, spinach in oil and spring rolls. Beaut!
Khai Dinh Tomb was the next place we went. It wasn't as big as the other one but it was really high up in the mountain you had to climb a million stairs! It was beautiful though, it was all grey on the outside with carved stone and golden on the inside. You could see for miles from the top!
Minh Mang Tomb was next, this was absolutely huge! Huge lakes, gardens, temples, statues and carvings. It was beautiful! Mum decided we had to Skype so ended up skyping her as I was walking around! She is always an inconvenience! Haha only kidding muma!! You can only see the tomb one day a year and today was not the day! Ohwell I've seen bricks before.
We then got on a boat that looked like a temple house on a catamaran! It was weird! I can't describe it just look at my pictures. Anyway this was slower then a snail, it's ok for the first half an hour but seriously it went about 0.003 miles an hour I was ready to commit! We are on this tour with some right freaks as well so maybe I would have killed them first!
We arrived at Thien Mu Pagoda. This is at the top of a huge set of stairs and looks out onto the river! It is an octagonal pagoda and is one of the most famous structures in Vietnam. It has lots of massive statues. Through the gateway is a temple where monks and Buddhists were praying. I love watching stuff like this!
For back on the slowest boat in the world to the main city.
We were both so tired! We were falling asleep on the way home! When we arrived we didn't have a clue where we were, asked the tour guide who just pointed in a vague direction! Fabulous.
Actually found our way back to the guest house at 5.30. Went for a walk to find a place to eat! As always the good stall places are the cheapest and best. They generally specialise in a dish and mainly sell that but we found one that did a bit of everything.
I had a fillet of tuna fish, which was spicy and they put what looked like fried sesame seeds on top that tasted of lemon. Words cannot describe how beautiful it was!
As we are still sick we had an early night again! Been sick for a while now!
