On my second day in Copenhagen, Dorthe made sure I had a real Danish breakfast pastry as part of my complete breakfast=) Then she showed me around old town Copenhagen. We first saw the change of guard ceremony a the Danish Royal Residence, Amalienborg, complete with marching, a band, and of course the big furry hats. Then we headed up the Round Tower, an old astronomy observatory, to get a great 360 view of Copenhagen (it was a cold, clear, sunny day). Then spent a few hours at a student-run cafe dethawing and chatting away. I was amazed at the fact that the cafe was run by student volunteers! They volunteer at the cafe to keep the prices down for the rest of the students! Anyways, after that Dorthe showed me Christiansborg, the old palace and now seat of their Parlament, Stroget street (full of fancy, expensive shops), and the H.C. Anderson statue. She cooked a yummy dinner again (I got to try some new interesting root veggies) so mommy don't worry, I'm being taken care of.=) Then we had some wine and beer to celebrate her passing her first university exams. Yeah Dorthe!!! After I said good-bye to Dorthe the next day (much too short of a trip) and Annika met me at the Amsterdam airport. We walked around the more touristy areas that I had skipped earlier and saw all the typical "coffee shops" and XXX shops, and of course lots of interesting people. After taking the train to Nijmegen, mostly student populated and the oldest town in the Netherlands, we headed into the center to a party for one of her friend that just got his medical degree. The funniest part of the night though was taking her bike in and out of the center...as she started on her bike, she asked me "can you jump? ", and I replied with a "what? jump? you mean onto the bike? " I guess here all they do is run and jump on the back of a person's bike, so that the person pedaling has a rolling start. Annika says she is going to teach me how later=) Today we woke up early and headed to her badminton match. It was cool learning about all the rules and watching them play. She is good. I also got to see BOM. This crazy aerobics class they have here. There is one instructor on a round platform in the center of a huge room, and about 100 people gathered in a circle around him. Then they do a bunch of aerobics moves in unison...and they really get into it=) It was pretty amusing.
