Yo!
I'm feeling a little under pressure after just reading my friends travel blog, which is beautifully written with amusing anecdotes and insightful comments on the cultural contrasts and political influences that define the countries they are visiting. Mine won't be that good...I can't write that well!!!
I've just returned from a 9 day adventure that took me round some of the towns / villages / cities / wilderness south of Perth. I organised to join 'Easyrider' bus tours which basically is a 3 day tour around all the major sights but you can opt to jump off at any of the places en route and stay for a few nights, simply waiting for the next tour bus to come through then I can jump back on again. So I took my time doing the tour, stretching it over 9 days.
Using the bus proved to be a good idea as it was my main source of meeting people and making new friends.
The first day I jumped off at a town called Bunbury along with a Canadian guy called Josh, who I ended up spending most of the next few days with.
The main attraction in Bunbury was visiting dolphins, so early next morning we walked down to the beach and settled down to some hardcore sunbathing / reading books / chatting whilst waiting for the dolphins to appear if they felt like it. Which they did, 3 times, and the first time a mother came in with her calf which was very cute. We were allowed to wade in and let the dolphins swim round us. We were told that they tend to be attracted to people of physical or mental disabilities, or pregnant people...thankfully they showed little interest in me...phew!
Next stop was Dunsborough where I hired a bike and did some pretty hardcore uphill work, and then some very exciting downhill work!! I cycled about 18 miles in total, getting a bit lost at one point. I knew I was lost when I cycled past a flag in the ground, suddenly realising I was cycling across a golf course...oooops!! I ended the day with a swim in the sea...which was bliss!
After a brief stop at Margaret River and meeting new friends we headed to the tree top walk in Walpole. I will add a photo of this at some point once I get my own computer up and running again. This is a series of bridges attached to the tops of Tingle Trees which were 40m high, allowing you to walk around the canopy. We got some pretty amazing views.
I then ended up in Denmark (town not the country) where I experienced Australia Day - a bank holiday - which like bank holidays in the UK everything was closed and it was pretty dull, especially as I was the only one who had opted to stay here so had no-one to talk to either! I did go and join the locals for an Aussie Breakfast in the park which was FREE!! And watched some people become inaugarated as new Australian citizens. One of which chose to dress in his full scottish kilt etc for the occassion, which I though was a little odd!
I met up with Josh again for the final few days in Albany, where I did a lot of walking and spent a day on Middleton beach. Which at one point was totally deserted and I had all to myself (another photo which I will add on) However I did pay the price by getting VERY burnt. I've spent the last few days resembling a tomato...it is going brown now but a whole lot of skin fell off my ear earlier....nice!!
On my final day back up to Perth we stopped off at various scenic points. My favourite being the 'blowholes' Where a huge piece of rock overhanging the ocean has small cracks and crevices forming throughout it. When a particularly big wave crashes directly underneath the rock a huge amount of air pressure / spray is blasted through, resembling the blast of air from a whale's blowhole. There is one point where you stand right over the crack and let it blast you. The anticipation in waiting for it was actually worse than the blast itself, although that was pretty exhilirating. There is a very silly picture of me in a ridiculously girly pose just as I'm being blasted...yes I'll put it on!! I also got a video of one of the other guys in the group too so will add that as well.
After arriving back in Perth last night I met Stew in town, who treated me to a slap up meal at McDonalds. We then met some of his friends in town, for drinks etc...a good night!
I arrived back to find a lovely bunch of pink roses in my room!!! Thank you to my lovely friends in Norfolk for an early birthday prezzie!! They are beautiful.
So the next few days I am in Perth for my BIRTHDAY!! Then head off to places north of Perth, going up as far as Exmouth, although there have been some pretty bad cyclones raging up there this past week so we'll see if I'm allowed that far.
Hope all is well with everyone and thank you for all the messages it's lovely to read them all.
