After the excitement and adventure of the camping trip, we were on a role so thought nothing of booking a full day hiking tour up a glacier. On second thoughts we did worry that 8 hours trekking on ice may be a bit tiring but nevertheless we stuck with it. We gave ourselves a free day prior to our big walk to relax and prepare ourselves. We did little but sit in the sun, chat, read and sleep. What a great day!!
On the day of the walk, we got up bright and early, fully prepared with our tuna sarnies, wooly socks and waterproofs, not to mention our tickets for the 9am walk. All our pals from camping had arrived too so they were all geared up to go. At the desk however we were in for a shock... the curse of nic and anna had struck again and we were told we should have been there for the 8am walk and so had basically missed out. As you can imagine two former law students were taking none of this nonsense!!! We sat in the office in a grump before the woman behind the desk finally dealt with us. She was very moody, even blaming us for the mistake, but we stuck to our guns. After a chat with her manager she came back sheepishly and offered us a helihike... well im scared of flying but i suppose itll have to do said nic in a voice worthy of an oscar nomination, we then went outside and burst into lafter - this hike was worth triple the value of our original hike :)
It definately lived up to expectations, the helicopter ride was fab and the ice stunning. We saw all kinds of ice formations including ice caves!!! We were quite an able group so ended up doing twice the distance the helihike normally covers. And seeing the instructer carve steps into the ice with a pick axe was awe inspiring! On the way down the helicopter did some amazing stunts and all in all it had been a fantastic day.
