After landing in Hong Kong we arrived at our hostel where we had a private room, thinking we would have a little luxury, when actually we were greeted with a nice little prison cell room and an "ensuite" where the shower head was over the toilet it was that small. But who can complain, I'd dread to be in a dorm with those small spaces!
On our first day we made our way to the cable cars which would take us up to see a big Buddha at the top, the view was incredible! However on our way back down we were faced with watching cable cars going the opposite direction....one couple in particular very much "enjoying" their private cable car up....where I think they were unaware anyone else could see. We then headed to the ladies market with hundreds of handbags, purses, jewellery etc. We stayed strong though and decided to listen to our stomachs instead and grabbed some dinner. MY GOD, one of the best noodle dishes I've had yet. We were served a feast of meats and noodles and I think for the first time we couldn't manage to finished it all. Afterwards we headed down to the harbour (which took around 30mins) but only 5 minutes in, Sarah was a little worried about her bowl movements which made our walk a little more amusing. But I have to say the half hour walk was definitely worth it. The view of the skyline at night was amazing. It seemed we had a celebrity with us though as Sarah was getting many stares and a woman even stopped her to take a photo with us and her family...but we went with it. We made our way back going via all the fancy shops picking out our engagement rings (Matt you best get saving ha).
After an interesting nights sleep where I woke up to Rhiannon telling me "my body feels weird, I feel like I'm on a boat" and her having no recollection of it in the morning, we hit up another market but again stayed strong and didn't give into our urges. We then made our way to Victoria Peak (where you take a practically vertical tram to a view of the whole city) but on our way there we stopped at a small restaurant where we tried some traditional dumplings which were super tasty. Rhiannon and I then sent Sarah ahead to sneakily buy a bottle of champagne to take to the top of the view point (Sarah was too busy trying to look in the plastic bag Rhiannon had to notice the bottle in my handbag). Once we reached the top we popped the bottle with an amazing view of the city and told her we were taking her to Disneyland for her birthday...yes she may have turned 24 but no one is too old to go see Minnie and Micky!
It was Sarah's birthday so as is standard we woke her up jumping on her bed and were ready to go to Disneyland. We arrived just as the park opened and were running around like little kids not knowing what ride to go to first. After a few rides we decided to go on a ride in toystory land (which was practically a pirate ship just in toystory theme). It was the funniest thing I've ever experienced, Sarah was screaming so hard I couldn't stop laughing...happy birthday! But it's safe to say after spending 10 hours on our feet we were ready to leave. If that wasn't long enough, once we got back we decided to go via the ladies market. We originally went just to see if Sarah could find a purse, even Rhiannon said "I'll just come with but I'm not getting anything!". Well that turned into 2 handbags and Sarah purchasing her fourth. I'd say we did well to last that long in Hong Kong without buying anything. However my back definitely felt it as I struggled to even go to the toilet without feeling like I was 100 years old.
With an early wake up we made our way back to Phuket where we spent the next two days trying to soak up the last few rays of sun (maybe we took it a little too far after looking like lobsters on our second day, thinking our British bodies could handle it). Two days in Phuket was definitely long enough though as we soon found out it was very much like the scenes of Benidorm with the exception of every 2 meters being asked to see a ping pong show.
Our last stop was back in Bangkok where we had already booked a lush 4 star hotel (luckily a lot earlier on in our trip where we all had the money to). We did walk through the door with our giant backpacks and were questioned if we were in the right place and laughed at by reception. We then headed for a last market fix and filled up on some more thai food...a place called magic max who whilst eating away on our thai curries entertained us with magic tricks that I still can't get my head around. To keep up with our lavish lifestyle we decided to head to the sky bar where hangover two was filmed. I mean it was very fancy and had an incredible view but our lavish lifestyle came to a very quick end as we got our bills...£16 per one cocktail. At least we got a taste of the life of luxury ha.
So after spending our last pennies we headed to the airport (knowing by now it would cost 400baht after going there countless times in our trip). Our cab driver on the other hand thought otherwise but eventually settled for 450. That was until we were stuck in standstill traffic...so while we were worrying about not making our flight he was sat laughing at the thought of it. Eventually we got to the airport, I ran ahead to make sure check in was closed while the girls were left to deal with the driver who didn't believe we had no more money and demanded more. I was left at the check in desk wondering...'what if he's driven off with the girls...' After about 15 intense minutes the girls finally turned up, bags in hand. It could have been the making of Taken 4 but luckily we escaped just in time.
So after 8 countries, 11 flights, 38 places, 19 hostels, countless hotels and night buses our trip has come to an end. And what a trip it has been!!! We have met so many people and made friends with some incredible people around the whole world...and of course not to forget these two girls who I've not only been able to share this experience with but who have made it even more incredible. I'm not sure how I will cope without the daily poo story's, naked dances and drunken antics. But I can say that even though my bank balance may not be looking it's best....every single penny was worth it!
