Hi all! We are still in Siem Reap and we have had a busy few days. We went to the temples yesterday and today. Yesterday our 'tuk tuk' drivers Lin and Tom picked us up at 8am. Our first stop was the ticket office where we had to buy our pass. We decided to get the 3 day pass as there was too much to see in one day. We then headed to the first of many temples of the day. I have written down the names of the temples which we visited but left it upstairs. At the moment I can only remember the names of the famous ones. We went to Ta Prohm, this is where parts of Tomb Raider were filmed. We spent a long time there looking around as the temple was huge. There were lots of humgumos trees and we all did a Lara Croft pose! After that we headed to a temple which was like a huge pyramid. We climbed to the top and the steps were really steep or none existent! It was very hard work climbing to the top as it was roasting hot. We found out from our driver that we have come to Cambodia in the hottest months. We have been so hot, its unbelievable! We then went to another famous temple called Angkor Thom. The main part of the temple was like a maze. We only had time to see the main one as we wanted to see Angkor Wat at sunset. Angkor Wat is the most famous of all the temples and is the biggest. Angkor Wat is the nations nation symbol. It is the source of fierce pride and the epicentre of their civilisation. We all walked to the top of a hill and then had to climb another very steep tower to get to the top. we couldn't really sunset as it was quite cloudy but still a brilliant experience. We all had to climb down before it got dark as it would have been far too dangerous to attempt the steps in the dark. As we were walking down the hill a thunderstorm started. It was thundering and lightening, we managed to get back to the tuk tuk before the rain. When we were in it it started to rain and the driver stopped to let down the side pieces. As we drove back the lightening was flashing everywhere and was illuminating the passing temples, it was very dramatic!
Today we left at 5am to watch sunrise over Angkor Wat, we were all very sleepy but as soon as we got there we were wide awake. It was very busy but we still had a brilliant view of the sunrising behind the temple. We had a wander around for a few hours. We then found Naomi and Rob at the lake and they were eating breakfast, so Me and Anita joined them. After Angkor Wat we went back to Angkor Thom, to see the parts we had missed the day before. Again we spent a while looking around and climbing up and down the temples. We had a look around a few more after and then arrived back into Siem Reap around 4pm. We then went to a restaurant for tea as we didn't have lunch as were too busy looking around the temples. At the moment we are all very tired, we are having a small lie in as we going to visit the remaining temples at 8am.
Whilst we were looking around one of the temples James's flip flop broke! He walked around for a while with it broken before he decided he would try and fix. James wanted some sellotape and of course Rob conveniently had some in his back pack. We all watched James carefully fix his flip flop, he put a lot of tape on and we all had bets on how long it would last. I bet it would last until the end of the road but I was wrong as the tape is still in place! We did have a look around the market earlier to find him some more as he only has his walking boots with him, but he couldn't find anything that tickled his fancy! So tomorrow he will either be wearing taped up shoes or boots!
All day and yesterday we have been constantly hounded at every temple by children selling various items. We did cave in today and we got some really unusual things! They are so persistent, we have found the best way to say no is to carrying on walking fast and ignore them! Today Naomi was followed for nearly 20 minutes by a girl selling her bracelets!
So far, we are enjoying Siem Reap a great deal more than Phnom Penh. It had a completely different feel to the place and is nothing like Phnom Penh!
I think that's all for now as I need to go and sort out my laundry as we are having laundry service tomorrow! Our next stop is Phnom Penh on Tuesday for one night then we are heading down to Kampot on Wednesday morning at 7am!
Will post again soon. x
