I finally finished my first week of classes! It definitely feels like quite an accomplishment—especially because they're all in Spanish, and I'm pretty sure I understood them all. I'm only taking 4 classes this semester, but if I were taking one more my brain would burst! Just from two classes a day, I've been so exhausted at night.
On Mondays and Wednesdays I have contemporary Spanish cinema in the morning and Flamenco in the afternoon. In movie class, we basically just watch movies. I'm pretty sure every American in Sevilla right now is taking this class. We have quite a few movies on the syllabus, most of which I've never heard of. My teacher (Monica) is super nice and we all agree is really good at explaining things, and making sure we all know what she's saying.
In Flamenco class, we're not dancing (unfortunately). We're learning about the dance and music of Flamenco, along with its history, and how it affects Andalucía. I'm still excited even though we're not dancing. For our paper, we have to go to 2-3 performances of Flamenco and compare them!!! I'm so excited to HAVE to go to Flamenco shows! My profe (David) seemed a little rough around the edges at first, but seemed to lighten up as class went on. I'm pretty sure he has a sense of humor—somewhere.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays I have Latinoamerican novels in the morning and Spanish art of the 20th Century at night. I'm pretty sure they're both pretty self explanatory! In my lit class, my teacher (Beatriz) is great!! She made us each write a little something about ourselves the first day, and on the second, she announced that from reading each blurb, it was easy to see that the class had varying levels of Spanish ability. She basically said some of us clearly know what we're doing and some of us…well…clearly do not! This is fine for me because she now babies our class, and literally reads a sentence or two, explains it, and repeats for the whoooole book we're reading. It might get old, but for now, it's nice to give my brain a break!
In Spanish art, it seems really interesting, but all we did for the first class was try to figure out when to move it to! We spent about 20 minutes looking over the syllabus and another 25 trying to figure out a better time to meet. The teacher (Lina) seems sooo sweet, but apparently has a conflict or something during our 7-9 timeframe, and needed to move it. Out of the 10 people that are in my class, there's not a single time other than 7-9 on Tuesdays and Thursdays that we can all meet! So it looks like Lina will be our teacher no longer, and her co-worker will step in.
Other than classes, nothing else really exciting has happened this week. My friends and I are trying to cement some travel plans which is pretty hard when there are 6+ of us traveling together! Our first (definite) trip is Paris!! We have a 4 day weekend coming up (Feb 26-March 1) so to Paris we go! We have our accommodations all set, but booking flights is a little more challenging! Also on our list of places to go are Italy, Amsterdam, Ireland, Morocco, Barcelona, and Cadiz. Some of the girls want to go to Greece, but it's not really at the top of my list.
I think that pretty much sums it up for now! Hasta luego, y besos!
