Today we moved from one accommodation to the more plush one for Cols birthday treat. Its really nice and loads more space, but i miss last nights little riverside bungalow which was lovely and more rustic.
After lunch we hired a couple of bikes to ride around the island. We headed down a small dirt path. We biked for a while and then the heavens decided to open up on us, did it rain! We pulled over and hid underneath some trees but it was becoming very heavy and the trees were not working anymore. Across the path there was a traditional house on stilts with about 6 children underneath playing. Col waved and asked if we could shelter underneath the other building were they kept a pig and chickens. They said yes but waved us over to their house instead. So for 30 minutes we sat underneath this little rustic house on stilts with these children who were so accommodating to us and did not speak a word of english. The older girl, maybe 12, was looking after the others and was making rice. We didnt see any parents around, they were probably at work, the little boy who was about 3 had a small frog in his hands, it was dead as he seemed to be manhandling it and it didnt have any legs, he then went to put it on the fire and later he started eating it!!!! ugrhhh but hey they are living off the land. To say thank you, Col gave his packet of mints to them, its all we had on us. We carried on and came across a shop, we bought a bottle of fizzy pop and some wafers for the children, we biked back and they came running out when Col handed them the pop and treats, they were so excited it was lovely to watch. The people here are ace, so nice and friendly, we officially love Laos.
