Blue Mountains, the mountain range surrounding Sydney has got its name because of the blue colour above the mountains, caused by the oil from eucalyptus trees mixing with dust particles in the air;) After knowing that, not much more about the Blue Mountains can surprise you, but when going out there, standing on the edge of a cliff and watching out on this huge wide-open space with green covered big hills with trees, and noticing the change of colour in the air, is amazing. The sun was out sometimes, giving a more clear view of the blue light, but mainly the clouded rainy sky above us did the job. We went in a small bus out to walking tracks pass waterfalls, viewpoints, eating our lunch opposite the Three Sisters, and climbing into the canyon to explore the old coal mines and the rainforest deep down in the valley. We rode back up on the worlds steepest railway, it was crazy, with a 50degree up-climb for the poor train full of exited people. It was a good day, interesting and in beautiful landscape.
I was sitting next to the driver in front on the whole journey, which was a good seat, but pretty tiring in the end, cause the driver talked and asked questions constantly throughout the day. We stopped by at the Sydney Olympic Park o our way back, and I was very exited about the swimming stadium they have built there. It is all open for the public now, so it was a pity that we didn't have time to take a quick swim. But well, you can't always get everything:)
I spent the evening back at the hostel with a movie, waiting for the bus departure, and took at 10pm a taxi to the bus station. I had a horrible night in the bus, but luckily I could check-in straight away upon arrival in Coffs Harbour Hostel, and I slept most of the first day tight in my bed.
In Coffs Harbour I went for a long walk along the harbour out to the Mutton Bird National Park, a beautiful little half-Island with rocky shores just like in Ireland, and I spent a few hours there, lying in the sun and enjoying the sound of the waves hitting the cliffs, spying for whales or dolphins among the many tiny sailboats.
The beach was wonderful as well, great for surfing and other activities, and it was packed. I was there until the sun was gone and went back to the hostel
Next day I had an absolutely great morning - I went out early, lying in the sun by the pool, reading or listening to music, and when it got too hot, I just jumped in the cold pool-water, took a few laps and went to warm up and dry in the sun. It was relaxation on high level, and so needed. Around midday I rent a bike and went up into the "real" city, and in general biked a bit around in the surroundings. It was exhausting work on the pretty badly geared bike, and I went early to bed, exited about the coming event tomorrow;)
