Cant find me a panda anywhere
The rough guides book has come in handy a few times so far. On the way over to Singapore I read about a well regarded coffee shop called 40 hands that was hidden away in a residential area that I would never of known about or stumbled across. It was well worth the journey, regarding it as one of the best coffees I have ever had (along with Colana and Smalls in Bath). It's very rare you get to taste the different character of the beans they use as most larger coffee houses stick to a house blend and slightly over roast if to give a consistent taste (or so I'm told). So, Darren George get yourself over to 40 hands now, and don't you dare book a flight on a A380....
Coffee trip aside the main purpose of the day was to visit the zoo, billed as the largest one in Asia. The animals are not separated by cages (apart from the big cats) and instead they use moats to keep them at bay. We brought a dual ticket, one for the day zoo and one for the night safari.
The elephants in the day zoo were rather impressive. We watched a play session with them and seeing a female elephant able to turn themselves around on nothing wider that a curb wasn't something I expected to see. You can get close to most of the animals too - with the orang-utans we witnessed one drag some palm leaves over himself in a little ditch to try and hide from the sun!
For the night safari you go into a separate park. 4 walkable areas exist and then you can get on a land train to be taken on a 45 minute journey around the park - this was the highlight of the day. There were a handful of animals I have never seen before as well as seeing some lions, tigers and another elephant that made movements that resembled dancing as we drove past. No pandas though, they are in the river safari section (don't know why) and you can only reach this by boat and all the tickets were sold out.
