Laos was lovely- and warm! We only saw the capital, Vientiane, and Luang Prabang, famous for it's temples and beautiful French colonial architecture. Both are how Westerns would like all Asian cities to be- quiet, cleanish, and without people giving you much hassle wherever you go. Would love to go back.
We did a 3 day biking/elephant ride/trek/kayaking which turned out to be far better than we expected. Despite being so close to Luang Prabang, the trekking route was through quiet, unspolit countryside, with a homestay in a village which seemed unchanged by the modern age. Our kayaking back down the river was also good as we saw people going about their lives by the river: growing veg, fishing, etc. At first, it was pretty gentle paddling, but later the rapids turned out to be more challenging than we expected. I managed to capsize our kayak, and then we couldn't stop ourselves being swept along for what seemed like ages.
