Santos and Shopping.
The next morning we headed for the garage that Mario had recommended (his brothers) so we could drop Bertha off to be fixed. Thanks to a tropical storm which was working it's way up the east coast it was tipping it down and by the time we found the place we were already soaked. This wasn't helped by us having the wrong address so we ended up about 4 blocks from where we wanted and had to phone Mario in order to get the correct address. After finally finding our way and settling Bertha in, Santos gave us a lift to Journal Square from where we could get the train into New York. As is usual in America there was very little useful information to work out which train, what type of ticket or even which platform to go to, so after questioning many people we eventually got to New York where it was still chucking it down. We were cold and wet and decided today was not the day for sightseeing so went window shopping instead. Inside the Manhatten Mall is a shop called American Apparel, it has sooo many gorgeous dresses at ridiculously cheap prices that I found it really hard not to buy anything! No wonder all the ladies at the salsa congress always looked so stunning in what I took to be expensive, designer dresses, they must have got most of their outfits from this place or similar! After Andy dragged me away we found an equally fascinating shop called The Strand which we spent about 2 ½ hours in! It was a bookshop that covered 4 floors and had 18 miles of books!!! One floor contained only rare books including first editions, signed books and some books that looked several hundred years old! You could only reach this floor via the elevator and had to be escorted to the till by a member of staff if you wanted to buy anything! We didnt get anything from this floor but after sifting through a large pile I'd accumulated whilst walking round we each went away with a couple of books. After nearly drying out it was time to face the weather again and make our way back to the motel...this took about 2 hours including waiting around in queues, changing from trains to buses to trams and finally to the airport shuttle the motel provides. By the time we got back I was miserable with a cold coming on so went for ahot shower while Andy went to get chinese from the local takeaway.
