For Thursday we got an early start at 6am and went to catch a ferry to Rangitoto Island which is a 30 minute ferry trip from Auckland.
Rangitoto is a volcano which erupted out of the Auckland Harbor 600 years ago, and 200 years later when it stopped, Rangitoto Island was left behind. No one lives there as its treated as a protected reserve but you can get a ferry out to it to do some hiking which is what we did. With our packs fully loaded as there is nothing on the island, we set off once we had docked and headed for the summit! Its 300+ meters and we were told it would take about and hour to get up there.
Seriously, what an amazing place!!! It was like being in LOST as it was like a proper desert island. The only bit that was done for you was a general clearing path to guide you to the summit and although the guides said it was an easy hike, it was bloody hard work and seriously rocky and steep at times!! It took us just over and hour but the view from the top was so worth it. You could see for miles and miles, but we couldn't stop too long as we had to head back to catch the ferry as there are only a couple per day.
On the way back down it went really cold and started to rain but it just added to the atmosphere and made it one of the best experiences we (Andy) have ever had! We made it back to the ferry dock just before the ferry arrived and took the chilly ride back to Auckland.
Rest of the day was spent not doing much before packing our bags ready to leave tomorrow.
