Our time in LA got busier on Wednesday as we tried to cram in lots of things in one day, which was made even longer by the lovely LA traffic jams once again, oh well.
We started the day by driving up to Hollywood as we wanted to go an do a tour of the Kodak Theatre as we hadn't done that before. The Kodak Theatre is where the Oscars are held every year and they do tours during the day for $15 each. We thought it was a bit steep to start with but at the end it turned out to be one of the highlights! We were in a group of 5 people with a guide who knew everything about the Oscars. We had a tour of the main foyer and grand staircase where all the celebs go on Oscar night, then a tour of the VIP lounge where all the big celebs like Tom Cruise, Brad and Angelina, George Cloony etc hang out. They also had a real Oscar statue in there which was cool! Andy asked why they called it Oscar and it was apparently because when they were trying to think of a name for it, some lady in the Academy office said it looked like here uncle Oscar! Random eh! We then had a tour of how they lay out the grand dining room for the after party and then through the back rooms of the theatre showing what goes on behind the scenes. They apparently have 250 people (125 on each side of the theatre) who's only job is to fill seats should a celeb run the loo during the show! How cool is that! We then went in a freight elevator which is where all the winners go before we went into one of the booths at the side of the theatre. What a cool place knowing all those celebs and stars are there every year, and we also found out it holds 3200 people which is mad when you look at it! Brilliant time!
Next on the itinerary was a drive down Sunset Boulevard where we found The Viper Room. This is the nightclub owned by Johnny Depp which was famous because River Phoenix died outside because of a drug overdose! We then drove down to look at the La Brea Tar Pits, but quickly drove on as it was just a pool of tar with a fake mammoth in it! Nice 30 minute detour there :(
Last for the day was Griffith Park Observatory. Andy has wanted to go each time we've been to LA but its always been closed so it was good it was finally open! You get great views over LA from there, plus they have loads of really cool space exhibits inside as well a great show put on inside the dome. You lay back in some lay-flat chairs and whole roof of the dome is the screen for a space show. Awesome!
Sorry if we're going on a bit, tomorrow we are off to the beach!
