Day 5; the adventure begins.
Song of the day; I will survive by Gloria Gaynor.
Early start as needed to get through Dar to airport before rush hour for flight to Arusha in Northern Tanzania. Virginia keeping her eyes closed and praying throughout the flight obviously worked because 90 minutes later we were banking steeply and the landing strip stretched before us for a remarkably smooth landing in the small plane in which we took up almost half the available passenger seats . We were met by our guide for the next 2 days - Freddy. First stop was Shanga- a work programme centre for those with disabilities from Arusha. Mostly using recycled materials they made beads, necklaces, bracelets and the like. Obviously goods were bought, and then we retired to the really neat restaurant for a great meal of samosas, soup, BBQ and salad and fresh fruit. Then onward to our overnight stop - Plantation Lodge on the edge of the Ngorongoro National park. The jouney was really quite spectacular, with breathtaking scenery, marvellously colourful villages passed through and some animals - boy did we get excited seeing 3 small elephants and a Giraffe - just wait for what the sad old gits experienced the next day. Naturally as Tracey had chosen it, the Lodge was a bit special. Fabulous 'small bungalows' surrounded the central bar/ restaurant area with beautiful gardens and a swimming pool. After a few sundowners, a great meal and off to bed.
