We are seasoned veterans now, adept at getting on and off aeroplanes with bikes, disassembled, packed, scanned, transported and reassembled. All arrangements worked superbly, suddenly we were at Bilbao airport facing a ride in the sunshine.
After five previous trips such as this one I tend to believe Alan if he tells me something. Big mistake! He predicted an easy 20 mile bike ride to our first hotel stop. In the early evening heat, with the thought of a pint of beer and a game of football to watch I was I'll prepared for the mountain we had to climb, it was a tough climb. Still that's what we are here for, what a great start. AB.
It seemed quite surreal eating pastie and Chips at Mcr Airport and 2 hours later sweating blood and snot up a 3 mile mountain that is not shown on my maps. Training this year had been restricted to long undulating rides in the Cheshire countryside in the belief that our coastal route would be flat. Sitting here in a beachside bar on day 1 surrounded by Himalayas is indicative of how wrong and stupid I am. 20 miles in 2 hours in 30 degree plus heat is not the freewheel to the coast I had planned.
Anyway , let's not grumble. Stupid holiday!!!
Tomorrow we have 75 miles of the same to San Sebastián. This may be the final blog entry as I catch the train to Bordeaux to await the grandparents on Saturday. Tomorrow will be fine but the surfer dude hotel doesn't serve breakfast till about 2 in the afternoon so we may be weak and hungry.
Andy has kept his fluent Spanish a secret as he was throwing in a load of buenos noches at reception. No sign of food or tv for footie so we may be in trouble.
Beer is going down well so it may be a liquid tea and breakfast. Duuuuuuuude.
