Hello again
The catch up continues...
After Durban we hopped back on the Intercape for a long 8 and a half hour drive North through the Drakensburg Mountains (above - but not our photo!). However Ali wasn't as happy as normal as the bus we were on had normal reclining seats rather than the usual 150o!
Now we were very nervous going to Johannesburg as we'd heard plenty of bad things about the place, both whilst at home and in SA. For that reason we had decided to only spend the 1 night there. We got to the bus station and called the hostel who arranged to come pick us up, in 45 minutes, an intimidating 45 minutes. The station wasn't the nicest of places. And Ali had a harrowing toilet experience, which I'll let her explain once she's had time to recover! But we could afford a smile when our lift finally turned up - Pat, a v.old, wrinkly lady, with thinning, curly ginger hair...and 4 ft 10! Plus she spoke as though she was holding her nose! However our smiles turned to grimises as we got in her 80's BM and choked on the smell of smoke, Ali was almost hanging out of the window. I asked her about all the roadworks through Jo'burg and for the whole ride so moaned and complained it was because of the 2010 World Cup (wish I'd never asked).
The hostel was ok although the food left something to be desired! But it was only 1 night! Then it was onto the airport for our flight to Singapore!
I'm happily to say that everything went according to plan and we had a very good flight. We'd definately recommend Singapore Airlines if you ever get the chance. I actually had some leg room for a change and was comfortable throughout! The only thing that let the flight down was the choice of movies, Ali went for Juno whilst I was left with Resident Evil 3, a poor comparison to Virgin when Ali got the new Harry Potter and I went for the latest Die Hard movie!
Anyway, the time difference was 6 hours from SA, 8 from the UK so we landed at 5.25am! Very tired and we realised we didn't know where the hostel was or have any contact details. Not a good start...
