Fiji Blog Entry
We have arrived in Fiji and it is about ten at night.(We had lost a day due to crossing the date line) We hadn't booked any accomodation, but we didn't care as we are seasoned travelers now. Just kidding, we were told by Graham and John that when you turn up at the airport there are people you can book in with and they will take you to the hostel.
They hadn't lied to us. we rolled into the airport and up to one of the desks, who took our reservation and then drove us to the hostel.
We stayed in a place called Nadi Bay Resort(Pronounced Nandi). As we got to the hostel quite late we had a couple of drinks and then off to bed.
The next day we woke up and looked out of the window. It was a shock, it was bright and sunny. I quickly greased myself up to get some of rays to my body.
It was absolutely boiling and the sun was beating downr once (Good times). For the next two days all we did was sun bathe, go out for dinner and chill out in the bar with a couple of beers. The first night, we went to a restaurant called Bounty, which was fairly
expensive in comparison to everywhere else but the food was very good. The next night we turned into utter tourists and went to Nando's (wasn't as good as home, but still good)
The next day we spoke to a couple of girls from Scotland who were going to a place called the Beach house. This was the place where they filmed the second celebrity love Island.
Nadi Bay Resort arranged for a bus to come and pick us and after a couple of hours driving we arrived at the Beach House at about 4 o'clock. From what we had heard, this place was very chilled out and had a very relaxed daily itinerary.
The itinerary is as follows:
10 - nature Walk
11-4 Cocunut jewllery making
4 - Free Tea & Scones
4:30 - Volley ball
7 - 8 - Dinner
7pm - 5/6am - Getting drunk
What a great day. This continued for the next seven days and we took part in most of the activities. I even indulged in the jewelery making, Oh and a 20 dollar massage for an hour. This works out to be around seven pounds. Frosty and I both got one and it was very enjoyable until Frosty got stung by a Hornet. (It had a very funny ending, but that's for another story) Fiji is turning out to be very good, the only bad thing that you could say about fiji in general is the amount of Mosquito's. The second night we were there I got aboslutley torn to pieces and then over the next few days, we all got our fair share of beat downs from the lovely Mossies.
We met some great people and had a great time over the week. One thing that I am realising when traveling is that it is not necessarily about the place you are but the people that you meet and are surrounded by.(It just so happened on this occasion, we had a nice place and good people) All the guests were great and the staff we unbelievable. They remember everyones name and always get invloved in the activities.
Hopefully we are going to meet up with some of the people along the way and alot of people sem to be going to Sydney for new year, so should be good if we met up with them.
After a relaxing week, we decided that it was time to move on and go to a place just down the road called Mango Bay. We were told by Graham and John (From Rarotonga) that they had a really good time there so though we would check it out for just one night. We turned up ther and it seemd very nice and the facilities seemed good.
The four of us stayed in a Safari tent, which was unusual but cool. We were all tired so it was a very quiet night. The good thing about this place was the five a side football pitch. We had a liitle game and then chilled out in the bar area.
Pete went to bed without food as he was tired and Alex, Paul and I had some dinner, then Alex went to be and Frosty and I stayed up as the were showing a film. The first choice was shrek the third, however the disc was rubbish, so we ended up watching Ocean's 13. Not a great copy but got the gist.
This place seemed really good, but it was so big there didn't seem to enough people there to get the same sort of vibe as the beach house. It was good that the beachouse has an itinerary, especially for dinner as everyone gt together at the same time and then heads to the bar with one objective (getting Smashed).
The following day we arranged for a bus to take us back to Nadi bay resort, so that the day after we could arrange the Island hopping (Where you take boats to see individual Islands that form part ofa collective group - The Yasawa Islands)
We had the best intention of doing this until we got back to nadi bay resort, and saw people who we were with at the beach house and also people who were there from
the previous week. We eneded up going out for a nando's then a few drinks and didn't wake up in time the following morning.
So we stayed that day, and did the same thng that we had done every day there and just relaxed. Then some more people from the beachouse joined us so it was another night drinking and we went to a local bar/club.
The next day however we did book up the Island hopping, and as we had paid for it, we had no choice but to go early the next morning. As we had to be up early the
next morning we just had a quiet one in the bar andthen to bed.
We were up early the next day to get the coach to the harbour for our beach hopping fun.
I will list the Isands that we saw and mention a bit about each of them including some of the activities we did.
Matacawalevu - this was a very quiet Island that we arrived at for lunch. There was hardly anyone in our resort. The special thing about this Island was that the British High Commission had jt installed a solar power water system and clean water. This was due to an Irish fellow called David who had written the campaign to the high commission and had been given the grant for the work. So in appreciation of this, they held a traditional Fijian thank you ceremony in honour of david's hard work and also thanking the high commission. We walked to the next village and at first we sat down and took part in a ceremony where you drink a local plant that is ground down and mxed with water and is called Kava. This is a narcottic and is similar to drinking mud water. We first tried this at the beachouse, although this was a lot stronger. It makes your face go numb and isn't very tasty. After this we went to another Kava thank you ceremony and then had dinner with the villagers. This included a full Pig, octopus and grilled fish. Very tasty.
Prior to dinner we tried to entertain the local children, who were quality and very energetic. They were climbing trees, picking coconuts and just jumping all over us. Alex was the true celebrity. They were hanging from his arms.
Then a 7 year old, climbed a tree, grabbed me a banana, used a machetti to cut it and handed it to me to drink and eat. It was so soft in comparison to the coconuts we get in the uk. This was a very memorable occassion and something you only experience once in your life.
After the fun, we left early and were in bed by about ten. There wasn't much to on the Island. The next day we did some snorkelling while waiting for the boat to take us to the next Island.
Naviti - This again was a very quiet Island. We were greeted by some of the locals, who sang to us and also gave us a coconut to drink. We had dinner and in the evening there was a dance competition and then some of us went over the hills to one of the islanders houses, to celebrate one of their birthdays. We listened to music and also took part in another Kava drinking session. Slightly milder though.
The next day, me and the boys had a game of football against the locals, which was good, but tiring as it was very hot.
Off to the next Island.
Waya - We arrived here just in time for the sunset and dinner and just stayed in the bar that night for a few drinks. This was the place that I saw my first moon set. Alex had mentioned that he had seen one a few days earlier, so we stayed up and he wasn't lieing. It happened at around 2 in the morning and the moon drops below the horizon and is bright ornge. After that small particles were getting washed up with
sea. They are called Phosfleurescant's (Don't know the spelling and don't even know if this is the real word - But i was tld it was)
They are like tiny neon particles tht are realy bright, like hallogen headlights. It was very cool.
Waya Lai Lai - This was the Island where we bought Alex's birthday gift for the next Island. We didn't do a great deal here. Played some football and watched the locas pactice rugby. The generator for the power was broken the night we were there so we had a few drinks in the bar and it was off to bed, o be woken up later by 3 dogs coming in the room. I thought I was having a crazy dream.
Beachcomber - This Island is known as the party Island and we spent the last two nigts here and timed it right so tat we were there for Alex's Birthday. This Island was tiny and you can walk around it in around 5 mins. We had a great time and the only thing that you could class as disappointing was the fact they close the bar at midnight. Not really a party island if they close the basr this early. We did have a good surprise
for Alex though. On the previous Island we purchased three bright green sarongs for Pete, Paul and myself and we bought Alex a bright orange one with a bright green and blue, Hawaii style shirt. God we looked good. The night was cool and we got Alex a cool Birthday cake, That we charged to his room. Take that birthday boy. (we did give him the money back - I think)
After the Island hoppig we went back to mainland and boed into a hostel for the night, had some dinner, then off to bed.
The next day we booked our flight to New Zealand and that's where my next blog entry will be coming from.
