Andrew's Travels
I have survived the adventurs up river and now find myself back on dry land and in relative civilisation again!
Having left Luang Prabang early in the morning we took a very misty, chilly and picturesque boat journey along the Mekong and then on to the Nam Khan for our jorney of six hours north to Knong Kiew.
The scenery was amazing and once the sun came out I didn't feel so out of place with everyone else wrapped up in jumpers and me in my shorts and t-shirt!!
Lots of pictures were taken and it was a very scenic trip, if not a little uncomfortable. Laos is a great country to visit but the one problem is that, due to the terrain, travelling is quite labourious and will require either a lengthy boat trip or an equally long journey by road. This is compounded by the fact that the Laos, like most of South East Asia, are not particularly tall resulting in rather uncomfortable travel for those of that are somewhat taller!
After a couple of nights in Knong Kiew we took another boat further north for a couple of hours to the remote little village of Muang Noi Nu where we spent another coulpe of nights. I liked it here especially....the scenery was amaziong, the jungle dense and for the first time I felt I had actrually found my way off of the beaten track and to somewhere not everyone is lucky enough to visit. Further evidence of this was to greet me on the first evening when I discovered there was no electricity in the village and after dark you were reliant on candle light alone!
We spent a day fishing with a coulpe of locals which was good fun and culminated in a riverside BBQ of some unidentified fish and sticky rice.
The following day we bid farewell to Muang Noi Nu and took a 7 hour boat all the way back to Luang Prabang....it was Saturday so we checked straight in to a hotel with cable TV for all of the premiereship football!
The following morning it was an early start for the 6 hours south by mini-van to Vang Vieng.....my current location.
