Calamari in Northern California...delicious! I am sat in Grant Hotel in Nob Hill, San Fran. It is a city I have always wanted to go to and it has not disappointed! Knowing that we really only have 1 full day here before we begin to drive the Big Sur over the next 2 days, it was imperitive that we made the most of today. After a very long night of driving (a situation that will be explained soon) we all managed to sleep through our alarms and not get up until eleven. Rushing out of the hotel smelly and unkempt we started with a one hour boat cruise of San Francisco bay, sailing around the infamous Alcatraz prison and under the Golden Gate Bridge.
After this pleasant start myself, Oli, Dan and chanman went to pier 39 for some greasy seafood where I had calamari and chips. I feel I have definately put back on the weight I lost in Nepal! The feed was followed by a 2 hour coach tour of the city. I loved it.
Yesterday we drove to San Fran from Las Vegas via Death valley! what we did not realise is that instead of taking just slightly longer than 8 hours if we had gone direct, it would add another 7 hours to our journey. This is a long time when driving around in temperate England and a much longer time when you consider that Death Valley is the hottest place on earth, yesterday temperatures reaching 48 degrees! It was good to see however I certainly wouldn't spend 7 hours there again! It didnt help that the car overheated and our brakes failed at the top of a huge hill! If we had been 20 metres further on we would have had a roller coaster ride of a lifetime.
Tonight I am exhausted, as are the rest of the lads. An early night is needed!
