What a busy weekend we have just had! The aim was to enjoy ourseleves as much as possible before Andrew starts work on Wednesday and I have to continue the joy of job hunting!
The weather on Saturday and Sunday was not great and very wet - not sure where the aussie sun is but its been hiding from us so far! We spent Saturday morning being generally lazy and then in the afternoon we had to go shopping to find some clothes that were half decent for Andrew to wear to work! Sunday was going to be a lazy day but a friend of Caroline's needed help urgently packing up their shop in the Dandenongs so Andrew went along to help with the heavy lifting while I looked after the children - 9 in total!
Monday was our sightseeing day in the city, we had such a great day, did loads and were all worn out by the end of it! We all caught the train in and first went to the immigration musuem, which was really interesting and free for us all to get in - bonus! We had taken a picnic lunch with us and after that we went up thje Rialto Observation Deck which is 253m tall and gives a great 360o view of Melbourne.
As a special treat, mainly for Sarah J, LAura and Ryan (as bribery for them to be good!) we all went to Krispy Kreme doughnuts. I had never tried one before and they were yummy. Some people in there were being a bit excessive though buying 6 or 8 boxes of 12 doughnuts! They are not cheap either! They must have been having a doughnut eating competiton or something!
We spent the afternoon wandering around the Docklands area in the sunshine which was lovely. The Dockalnds area called Waterfront City has been done up very nicely with loads of exclusive restaurants along the wharf and posh boats all lined up in the harbour! The children know this area especially well as their Dad lives here so they were giving us the guided tour!
Everywhere you look in Melbourne there is a piece of modern art, it is a very cultural city in that respect! Some of it is beautiful while other pieces are just bizarre! One in particular that was a bit weird was the cow in the tree - see the pictures!
We finished the day by wandering alongside the River Yarra in the area called Southbank, where again there are loads of exclusive bars and restaurants and at at the moment there was a great display for the Spring Carnival with music and billboards with the story of horse racing.
Tuesday was Melbourne Cup Day "The race that stops the nation", similar to the Grand National but a flat race and everyone gets the day off work for it! We were unable to get tickets so instead we had our own race party at Caroline's. We all got dressed up in our best clothes with hats and ties! We had champagne with strawberries, cocktails and nibbles and we had our own sweepstake with $12 as first place, $5 for second place and $3 for third. It was hilarious, really good fun!
The results were Laura in first place with Efficient, Caroline in second place with Purple Moon and Sarah J in third place with Mahler! We even had a presentation ceremony! I had a load of donkeys and never stood a chance! Whilst Andrew was gutted, one of his horses was winning for the whole race and then dropped back to last place right at the end! We should have had a booby prize for that!
Needless to say we were all knackered last night and early to bed as Andrew has to get up at 6am for his hour and a half commute to work! While I continue looking!
Hope everyone is ok!
Lots of love
Sarah and Andrew xxx
