We arrived in Cairns on Tuesday after our last bus ride with Greyhound and were met by Debbie and Grant at the bus station. We met Debbie and Grant in Peru when we did the Inca Trail and they are kindly putting us up for the week while we explore Cairns. It is so nice staying at their house, which is so beautiful, right by Clifton Beach, about 20 mins out of Cairns.
Wednesday we had a sorting out day (lots of washing!!) and went into Cairns with Debbie for a bit of an explore.Cairns is a fairly big town, very touristy and had a really nice lagoon, as there are not any beaches actually in Cairns itself. We also found a British Lolly (Sweet) Shop, where Andrew was in heaven as you can imagine!
Thursday we went to Kuranda on The Original Kuranda Scenic Railway, which was originally built to connect the goldfields with Cairns. The train winds steeply up into the mountains above Cairns, where there were some beautiful views.Kuranda itself is a small town, again basically surviving on tourism. There were lots of shops and markets selling everything from didgeridoos and boomerangs to crocodile skin handbags and kangaroo hand back scratchers (literally made with a kangaroos hand!).We were supposed to get the longest gondola in the world back down the hill to Cairns, however just as we got to the front of the queue there was a power cut, so we never got a chance to go on it, which was a bit disappointing.Instead we were bused back down, but only after we had sat there waiting for 2 hours!!
Friday we went on a snorkeling trip to the Outer Great Barrier Reef called the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs. We sailed from Port Douglas, which is a sweet little town with some beautiful coastline and beaches. We had such a wonderful day, it was cloudy but visibility in the water was as much as 20m so we could see all the fish and coral and even a shark! It was so beautiful and colourful, people had said to me it was not as good as they had hoped but we thought it was amazing and had a great time! The journey out to the Reef from Port Douglas was pretty rough and a lot of people were sick, not us thankfully thanks to some strong travel calms! We were able to spend an hour in the water snorkeling at each of 3 different reef sites.A definite highlight of the trip and highly recommended!
Today is Australia Day so we are celebrating in true Aussie style by having a BBQ at Debbie and Grants and drinking lots of stubbies whilst floating around in their pool!
Hope everyone is well - don't forget to check out the other blog for Cairns we have some big news in it!!!
Lots of Love
Sarah and Andrew xxx
