Hello from Buenos Aires,
We arrived yesterday after a 18 hour bus journey, but this bus was the height of luxury with fully reclining seats, pillows, blankets, films, dinner with champagne and breakfast! We are living the high life!!!
On first sight BA appears to be very European and San Telmo, the area we are staying in could easily be an area in any European city. It is also very cold here, its going into their winter and a bit of a shock after the heat in Brazil!
Today we have been wandering around taking in BA and seeing the major sights in the city centre including the Casa Rosada which is the pink presidential palace from where Evita addressed the crowds on one of the balconies. We looked around the remodeled 18th century Museo del Cabildo, which is all that is left of the colonial arches that once surronded the Plaza de Mayo. We also went in the Catedral Metropolitana where there was the tomb of Jose de San Martin, the bloke who liberated Argentina and has a lot of places named after him!
A bit of a trek down the Av. Mayo took us to the Palacio del Congreso which is supposed to look like the Washington DC Capitol building. Outside of which there were people protesting about the Malvinas, keeping our heads down we kept on walking - quickly! We saw the block of enlightenment, a solid square of 18th century buildings, it looks like its seen better days.
The main street Av. is apparently the widest city street in the world, at least 18 lanes of traffic, its a complete nightmare to get across! In the middle of this street is the famous white Obelisco, which is huge.
Tonight we are going to check out a Tango Show - I might get Andrew dancing yet!
Lots of Love S and A xxx
