Paddington Abroad 19 Jan 2007 Mr Selby [50] will help Paddington Bear [50!]. Paddington went to visit Paddington Station for his birthday and was found by Mr Selby's wife Ana [!?]. "Does he still need looking after?" Ana said to herself. And before Paddington could say marmalade sandwich, he was on his way with Mrs Selby. "We'll take you to Peru to see your aunt Lucy," said Mrs Selby who is very good at organising things! "But we're going the long way round. You don't mind travelling all the way around the world to see your relative do you Paddington?" Paddington just thought he'd have to speak to Mr Selby. But where is he? Does he always disappear when you've got something important to do,like go to Heathrow airport to catch a plane? Mr Selby will help Paddington to see his aunt.Next stop Ghana........to be continued. Comments: Always knew Paddington would arrive safely. Thought he'd like to know that his sweetheart, Kate Selby is back from skiing, albeit with a cold! and she stayed with her friends H&C and used Mr & Mrs Selby's bedroom and was fussed over by Coral. She collected her boxes and has headed back to Leeds. So please let Paddington know that she's safe. Paddington finds out value of 10,000 Cedis 28 Jan 2007 Paddington had to go back to the airport in AccraGhana three times before his missing bag arrived from England. Then to his surprise he saw that the Ghanaian money came in such large numbers - 10,000 Cedis, what could all that be worth? 60 pence!Paddington is staying with some lovely people in a house in Accra, the capital city of Ghana. The house is near the largest hospital in Accra, it was built for a doctor to live in. In the garden you can sit in the shade of mango and cashew nut trees. Mr Selby is especially delighted because a large orchid is growing in the front garden as well!A wind called the Harmattan has been blowing dust into Ghana from the Sahara Desert, so it has been very misty. It hasn't been this bad for 10 years. The wind and mist do make it a bit cooler though, but in the last three days the heat has been rising.The food here is very good. Peanut soup with pieces of meat in it; a sauce made from smoked fish, spinach and onions; beef stew and chicken stew with the feet left in - some people like them. Mr Selby has been eating his food with his fingers! Fufu is dough made from cooked, ground up yam or cassava with some plantain sometimes. You pick up a bit of it and make it into a little ball, and then you dunk it in the soup or stew. The next move can be tricky as you try to put it in your mouth without dribbling it down your shirt! Or coat.On Thursday 25th January the National Theatre in Accra had a play about why children end up living on the streets of the city. The children acted very well and even managed to make us laugh.Back in the garden Paddington is getting too hot and the Pied crows are making so much noise it's time to go back inside for another drink of cold water. Take carePosted 12:35 on 31 Jan 2007 by A Drovers home group member 3. Paddington Meets the Weavers 26 Feb 2007 Kente is the name of a very special sort of cloth. Kente weavers are very skilled and spend weeks weaving brightly coloured patterns in thin strips. These strips are sewn together to make a larger piece of material. Paddington was so pleased to be shown how it was done. You have to use your brain, both arms and both feet to control the simple loom. Some of the patterns are so special that only the king is allowed to wear them. Which is just as well, because a new king has just been chosen and had to be carried about showing off his lovely clothes. Even though it hasn't rained in Ghana for three weeks, Paddington has kept his coat on. When it gets to over 40°C in the shade he might think about taking it off. Mr Selby hasn't seen his coat since he landed, and doesn't want to! After a six hour bus journey to Kumasi, Mr Selby had a shirt made in the Ghanaian style. It only took the tailor three hours to make. It's blue.When Mr and Mrs Selby arrived in Nigeria, they went to Abuja the new capital city, and were taken to another dressmaker to have a matching set made. They were invited to a wedding in Kaduna. Mr and Mrs Selby both look lovely in pink. A dress and a shirt in the same material, I expect you can guess who wore the dress - that's right MRS Selby!The Kente weavers are still busy weaving. It can take up to nine months to make enough material for a king's robe. Comments: Excellent going Paddington! Give my regards to Mr and Mrs Selby. Paddington in India 19 Apr 2007 After three months in Africa Paddington has arrived in India. Being very brave he took Mr Selby up to the roof of their hotel in Jaipur. From the roof he could see a hotel opposite that had tents on the roof. A motorcyclist drives past, probably a taxi! Sometimes you see four people travelling on one motorbike, very dangerous, but it happens all the time here! The white car behind the tree is also a taxi. It looks old, but over here they are still made like this. It's called an Ambassador. Mr Selby has been in another sort of taxi as well, called a Tuk-tuk. It's powered by the kind of engine that is also used on lawnmowers. When Mr Selby travelled in one he was with seven other people and it still went quite fast! Please don't worry about Paddington falling off. In India they let you go very close to the edge, so we are all very careful and sensible. Comments: i hope you are having a good time. Paddington paints the walls red, blue, yellow....... 19 Apr 2007 In Northern India a visit was made to Mandawa in an area of Rajasthan called Shekhavati. Mr Selby stayed in an old merchant's house called a Haveli. It has beautifully painted walls, they're called frescos. The local temple also has frescos and the one you can see has some animals in it. Do you know what they are and what they are doing? You may have spotted the boy on the left. What do you think he is holding in his hand and what is he doing with it? Paddington thought it would be good to colour in the white animals, but as they are 300 years old Mr Selby said it would be better to leave them as they are for other visitors to see. Paddington is also very pleased to see that year 6 did so well playing hockey, well done. Comments: Well done, Paddington and your companions. The Most Beautiful building in the World? 28 Apr 2007 Paddington was discovered by the security guard hiding in Mr Selby's camera bag.Everyone was hoping to see the wonderful building called the Taj Mahal.Mr Selby pleaded with the guard to let Paddington out, but the guard said no. The guard smiled when Mr Selby said, "Paddington has come all the way from PriorySchool in England." The guard had very clear instructions. He said, "Paddington is an evil doll and must stay in the bag and not come out!" Mr Selby was grateful that Paddington was not taken away and did not argue with the guard as he was carrying a gun!The guard was even worried about Mr Selby's spare battery but agreed to let Paddington look after it inside the bag.Everyone enjoyed looking at the Taj Mahal and Paddington stayed safely in the bag. The Taj Mahal looked especially wonderful as the sun rose and bathed it in the early morning light. Afterwards everyone was tired. Getting up at 5 o'clock is a bit early even if you are going to visit the most beautiful building in the world! 7. Paddington catches the last camel! 28 Apr 2007 The sun was setting fast and Paddington was a long way from the old palace where he was staying.Mr Selby was with the tour guide looking at another ancient building.Suddenly a man picked up Paddington and said, "Don't you remember? I brought you out here on my camel cart!" Paddington remembered how everyone had clung on to the wooden platform of the cart and said, "Can I catch the last camel cart home - I think the sun is affecting my memory." Well the temperature had reached 40ºC during the day!Mr Selby took a photo of Paddington and his camel and everyone went back to the palace. 8. 216 Faces look at Paddington 2 Jul 2007 Cambodia has some very good places to visit. There are a lot of temples at a place called Angkor.Bayon temple was built over 800 years ago. The king thought it would be a good idea if faces were carved all over it!There are 216 faces and they all have a little smile.This one looks happy to see Paddington!Paddington has been to five countries since India. They are Sri Lanka, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. Can you find these countries on a map of the world?What do you think this face would say if it could speak to Paddington? Paddington on a tropical island 18 Jul 2007 Paddington has found a lovely place to soak up some sun.Mr Selby has lent Paddington his school bag to lie on.You didn't know a Priory bag was going around the world did you?Mr Selby keeps his coat rolled up in the bag. It has been so hot in all the countries he's visited that the bag has only been opened once since Mr Selby left Bury St Edmunds!Paddington wanted to sun bathe on the tropical island called Koh Samui near Thailand, but the monsoon weather made it very cloudy. The monsoon is a time when there can be rain on nearly every day for a month or two. The rain usually only comes in the afternoon or evening. It is still very hot though.Everyone here hopes that you all have a great holiday with good weather. Not like June - we heard about all the rain!Don't forget to wear your hat in the sun and cream to protect your skin.Happy holiday to you all. 10. Mr Selby caught on camera 18 Jul 2007 Paddington and Mr and Mrs Selby celebrate when Kate comes to see them.Kate is Mr Selby's daughter.On Koh Samui you can relax with your drinks on the beach as the blue sky fades away into a sunset. It's a long time until September, but there will be another story about Paddington when you come back after your holidays. Paddington in the Garden 10 Sep 2007 Paddington has been trying not to think about Aunt Lucy. He has been wondering what you all have been doing over the summer holiday. The holiday always seems to be over too soon doesn't it? Paddington also wondered what you are keen on. Can you guess what Mr Selby is always going on about? Orchids, they're a kind of flower. So Paddington went with Mr Selby to the National Orchid Garden of Singapore. The national flower of Singapore is an orchid. Paddington agreed to be photographed surrounded by orchids. Just think of it as a bunch of flowers to wish you well for your new year at PriorySchool! The last continent on his long journey around the world with Mr Selby.Sometimes Paddington wakes up in the morning and remembers his dream. Has he just come home after a walk in the park with Aunt Lucy?In the park there was also a dog and some children talking about a glowing key. If you look carefully in the picture you can see Aunt Lucy holding Paddington's hand. And is that something glowing behind Paddington? Paddington Meets a Kiwi 24 Sep 2007 The summer may be over in Bury St Edmunds, but in New Zealand the winter has just finished and spring has begun.Paddington and Mr Selby are in Rotorua. It is famous for hot springs, hot pools and hot mud. The water and mud are heated up by the hot rocks under the ground. A long way under the ground. You can see the hot rocks when a volcano erupts.In Rotorua you can see some strange animals that look like birds. They are called Kiwi. You have to be very quiet to see them because they are very shy. Paddington sometimes growls without warning so he could only see one through some glass. People from New Zealand are called Kiwi, but most of them are not very shy!There are lots of interesting things to find out about kiwi. It's called "The Shaking Isles." That's because it has lots of earthquakes, hot water coming out of the ground and volcanoes. Paddington felt one earthquake. In a shop not far away, all the vases and ornaments fell off the shelves and smashed on the floor! Oops!Mr Selby and Paddington went up a volcano and found lots of snow. It looks a bit dirty because it has been there a long time. People ski on this volcano in the winter and spring. I wonder if Paddington is trying to build a snowman? He thinks that you will be jealous because he can play in so much snow. Do you think it will snow in Bury this winter? Maybe the school will have to close! The dog is in the air. Louise, Jamie, Liam and Dawn. Thank you for all your wonderful answers. I haven't checked with anyone here, but I think the boy is using a fly swat. He is keeping the flies off the important man. I'm glad to see that you are all trying to stay healthy. As you all know I like to eat cake, but in India it is so hot I don't feel like eating too much. PS. I had a lot of trouble getting here because the people who were going to fly here cancelled all their flights until October! So I came with Sri Lankan Airlines. But when I arrived at New Delhi airport THEY had also CANCELLED my flight. I was taken with my wife and Paddington and all the other passengers to a lovely hotel. The next day, 15th May, we flew to Colombo.And why did they cancel the flight? Nancy Richard...please...the description of eating a roasted guinea pig was just a little too detailed. I don't know how you could have done it!! Well I'm sorry to say Corq is really in the dog-house. Two days ago he sneaked upstairs when I was out, squeezed into the wardrobe, dragged out the bags with the children's stocking contents and set about devouring three bags of chocolate coins. He mananged to get some wrappings off (how?) but he ate quite a few as is now apparent as he has been sick 14 times, each time presented a coin wrapping. Don't worry he's not ill, fighting fit really, and snoring contentedly as I write curled up in his bed. But he will not be eating anymore chocolate coins. love from us all, Nancy & co

Mike and Denise Just time to say that wherever you are in just under a weeks time - do have a lovely Christmas, and please, no more guinea pig roast!!! I'm afraid that blog entry only scored 4* 'cos I couldn't quite get beyond the little feet/paws, and cute little ears and whiskers and nose. Was it straight haired or one with rosettes? I hope Richard understands it will take some time for your readers to get over that one!!!! Richard (& co) Hi Richard & Ana I am looking at your blog & saddened by the news of the theft, but good to know you are both well and being as positive as possible over the matter! What else can you do?! It is great to catch up with your news via this blog. I am on a day off school today (the whole school has a day off for Xmas shopping! jaw dropping or what!!?). I am trying to do a work assignment that has to be handed in on Monday. The work has been harder than I thought and I have some issues with behaviour management in class and around school. What fun! I am persevering (good old St Percy Vere!). Hilary is working hard too . Chris & Elizabeth have both been to the theatre recently with Hilary (Elizabeth saw Joseph in London & Chris went to Colchester for Julius Caesar-Shakespeare!- they all enjoyed it -so quite encouraging!). I haven't been to CCMH much as at weekends I am usually in the study working! Hilary & Elizabeth have been going & we have all had some good support from one particular person there. Well it will soon be Christmas!-where will you be for Christmas? Your travels will be coming to an end soon I guess? Where do you go to next? I will check your blog for your schedule. Malcolm and Rachel (and Rosie) Hi there again. Awesome, your travels just seem to get better and better. Rachel and I would love to work in NZ for a few years if possible, maybe even emigrate, who knows. We have just returned from another house swap to Harrogate and then up to my parents in Edinburgh. Had a lovely time, and Rosie is now up walking behind her trolley, although hasn't managed to reverse or turn it when she hits the wall or sofa. When are you guys coming back?

Bercol Hi Richard and Ana, Glad you are going well. We like the photos and reading the blog. We have had a splendid sunny day today and warm too with very little wind. We had lunch at a new Italian restaurant and did a bit of shopping in M & S. Colin is going to the Isle of Dogs on Saturday to an open day at the Island History Trust. I don't know if he has told you, but he has even been advertising it on T.V wHATEVER NEXT! Travelling around New Zealand in a camper van looks like great fun!
