So I'm currently on a train back to London from Cornwall. It's a 4 hour train ride and it's dragging by. I didn't post anything about yesterday so I'll do a little catching up.
We only had one full day in Cornwall (yesterday) so we tried to make the most of it. We all woke up yesterday and drove down to Tintagel so we could visit the ruins of Tintagel Castle.
Tintagel Castle is apparently the birthplace of King Arthur, it sits on a rocky headland that overlooks the sea. This is also where Merlin's Cave is. The castle was once all in one piece but the sea slowly eroded the connecting land between the headland and mainland (which part of the castle was built on), and it fell into the ocean taking part of the castle with it. So now half of the castle is still on the mainland and then the other half of the castle is on the newly-made island.
We paid a small fee and then hiked up a million tiny stone stairs to the island (I'm still feeling those stairs today). It was so amazing! The brochure we had was the one they hand out with your ticket so the descriptions of the remains were super vague. They wanted you to buy the fancy guidebook but I'm just going to Google it all when I get home. Everything was so cool and interesting, I kept waiting for Gerald Butler or someone to come galloping up on a horse...it never happened.
After we hiked around the castle we went back into the town of Tintagel and got some lunch. Then we headed down to Port Isaac so I could mail a postcard off to my parents. The show Doc Martin is filmed in Port Isaac and my parents love that show so I had to stop by. The town was actually super cute, it was this little tiny fishing village with some local shops. There was even a sign outside of one of the restaurants that said "non-residents allowed," so I guess they have pubs and stuff in the town that only allow locals? I'm not sure but I think it's an awesome idea and the Delaware beaches should totally take this idea and run with it. We got some Cornish ice cream while we were in Port Issac too, it was so delicious! I got clotted cream & black currant. Sounds awful but it was amazing.
We headed back to Kat's house and ordered proper Fish and Chips for dinner, it was soo good! You can get lots of different fish but I got cod, which as far as I know is the "original."
This morning was our last day with Kat and her family. We went to Padstow today which is another little fishing village, probably the most popular of the Cornish fishing villages. We played "crazy golf" which is mini golf, it was a lot of fun but I lost horribly! Haha We got some Cornish fudge and then we each also got a Cornish Pasty. A Cornish Pasty is basically like a fancy hot pocket, or a chicken pot pie that is more travel friendly. It has a flaky crust and is in the shape of a half-moon and is filled with whatever your heart desires. Cornish Pasties are said to of come from the days of the miners, the wives needed to make something for the men to take down into the mines that was filling but allowed them to hold and eat their meal without their extremely dirty hands ruining it. So they made pasties. You start with a round piece of pastry and you put the filling in the middle, then they'd fold the pastry in half and crimp/roll up the edges. The miners would then hold the pasty by the thick crimped edge and eat the pasty and then throw the edge away since it was all dirty from their hands. You can get them in all sorts of fillings now but back in the day, it's said that they filled half of the pasty with a savory filling and the other half with a sweet filling so it was like dinner and dessert all in one. I got a traditional pasty which was steak and potatoes (it was so delicious!), but they had other fillings like chocolate & banana, Thai chicken, ham & cheese, vegetable...
While we were in Padstow, I got some more money exchanged at the bank...how depressing! Since I didnt have a bank account I could only exchange up to £100 worth. I gave her $160 and got back £97 and some change. It was so sad.
I was super bummed to have to leave Cornwall, it was soo pretty and cute and relaxing out there. Kats family were so fun and welcoming, they're one of the nicest families I know. Now I'm stuck on a train back to London, I'd really love to use the bathroom but I can't imagine how I'd accomplish that in their restroom since the train cart is swaying back and forth and hitting bumps and such. I hardly could walk down the aisle without falling into people, let alone use the bathroom efficiently. Can't wait to get back to Indys though, I'm exhausted and we'll get to meet her Dad who has just come home from South Africa! Tomorrow we have a few errands to run and then we wake up bright and early on Thursday to fly over to Dublin! :)
