Ok so this blog is really about Hue and Hoi An (where I am currently). From Hanoi I took a lovely sleeper bus ( what is with those here? Do we even have them in Canada?) to Hue, a smallish city in the middle of Vietnam. From there me and a columbian girl who I met up with went on a day long motorcycle tour to the demilitarized zone. It was one of the best tours in my travels and at least a highlight in Vietnam. Sure it was 4 hours of non stop motorcycle riding, through burning sun and then pooring rain, but the sights were really interesting and the best one was the Vinh Moc tunnels. This is a huge tunnel system underground where the Northern Vietnamese and locals lived during the War. Only a small portion is open to tourists, but it was still cool. The tunnels go deep underground, and can get REALLY small. Some were only a meter and a half high, and apparently they were made larger for the tourists. If you are claustrophobic DO NOT GO! I'm not but I was definitly beginging to feel that way down there. The ride back was breathtaking. Along perfect white sand beaches, rich green rice patties and with a perfect sunset. It was a perfect day, if you overlooked our drivers trying to get more money out of us...but hey that was expected.
Then down to Hoi An. I love it here! It is the land of cheap tailors! how could I resist? Really, this small town is the tailor capital of Vietnam which says something. They line the streets, and not just tailors but cobblers too! Ok so the quality isn't really that great but for the amount you pay it's just fine. Oh and did I mention the beach? The water is warm and the beach goes on for miles. I am now living off mango shakes (basically fresh mangos frapped in a blender) and vietnamese iced coffee, both of which you can get for a buck of less. So if you are pictureing me here make sure I have a mango shake in my hand.
