Hiya everyone,
I carried on up the coast and made it to Mackay. Whilst I managed to miss the major cyclone there was still lots and lots of rain. I still managed to visit Eugella national park and see the platypus though. The national park was lovely and the platypus were very cute so it was definately worth the visit. After Mackay I went on up to Airlie beach and the Whitsundays for a couple of days. The weather was still pretty poor so I didn't go and see the islands which was a shame. However, despite the rain it was still nice and warm so it wasn't too bad. On the morning of getting my 13 hour coach to Cairns the rain was still torrential and our bus was 3 hours late. As we all huddled under the shelter with the space of dry floor in the centre becoming smaller and smaller I admit to be slightly less enthralled by the 'rain but hey it's still warm concept'! However after a rain filled coach ride and night in Cairns the sun came out again. I travelled up to Port Douglas and although the weather remained a bit iffy for another 24 hours for the rest of my week it was stunning. Apparently it was the first nice weather for a couple of weeks so I was really lucky. Port Douglas was a nice little town to spend 24 hours in but I soon moved on up to Daintree National park to see the oldest rainforest in Australia. I stayed in a hostel in a little cabin in the middle of the rainforest which was very atmospheric! I shared my cabin with a big spider (who seemed to never move and be quite friendly), a very noisy cricket and 3 cane toads who lived under the raised floor. Whilst all these were quite welcome the mozzies were much less so. I was also slightly perturbed to wake up one morning and see that my spider friend had moved from his spot for the first time in 3 days. I decided not to wonder whether he had climbed down into the bed and get a move on! There were lots of great walks in the rainforest to do and cow bay beach was also only a half hour walk away. I went on a night walk into the rainforest which was really interesting. We managed to see a dragon lizard, a little mouse and lots of err interesting spiders and bugs. We spotted lots of birds sleeping on trees and one with a little baby. Unsurprisingly none of them seem particularly thrilled to have a touch light suddenly appear! Once I returned to Port Douglas I spent a day scuba diving and snorkling on the great barrier reef which was amazing. The coral was beuatiful and the fish amazing, from the huge to the tiny ones. I also did manage to find nemo! I also saw a lovely huge turtle and got a little over-involved and swam off to catch up with it. Apparently on a intro dive you're not meant to leave your instructor at all let alone swim off 30 metres and leave him behind. Being told off 10m under the sea was a novel experience and managed to be quite commical. Swimming off was definately completely worth it though!
I returned to Sydney to stay in Manly at my friend Meenaka's house for my last week before returning home to lovely England. It was really nice to have a break from hostels! We had a couple of lovely meals out and lots of lovely meals in and a went to a fantastic bbq. Definately the best way to end my travels!
I'm getting the plane back today so I look forward to seeing you all soon. Thank-you for all the messages whilst I've been away. My camera is refusing to turn on at the moment but my memory card looks ok so I will try and upload the rest of my photos when I get back. I am trusting that I can make it home in an event-free manner so there should be no more blogging!
Lots of love Amyx
