Hello everyone! Firstly apologies about the email hacking disaster! Why I seem to attract all forms of technology related disasters is beyond me. My phone and camera have not yet turned against me but there is still time. When I found out I did change my password and I thought everything was sorted. Weirdly though I was getting very few emails. After not hearing from my parents for nearly three weeks I thought that this was perhaps taking out of sight out of mind a tad too far. Anyways it turns out my email account was not working so I now have a new one. I have since been informed by my mother on the phone that she had been emailing and calling me and that some people had written on my blog. Whilst I can't take responsibility for my phone being out of range I simply had not discovered the message part of the blog. I have absolutely no excuse for this!
Still, crisis over. No damage done apart from making me look a wee bit flaky. Thank-you all who phoned my parents in concern. Sorry to my parents for completely disappearing off the radar! Also thank-you for everyone who has since emailed me - it is lovely to no longer feel like an email-less traveller! Also now I'm out of China facebook works again so all is well.
Right, back to actual travelling! Since I last blogged we travelled to Yangshuo in Guilin which was lovely. Very very very touristy but really relaxing. The scenery was unbelivable. There were lots of limestone hills and the small town was right by the countryside. We went on a bike ride into the countryside which was lovely. The weather was amazing, the ground nice and flat and the scenery fantastic. I think it was my favourite day in China. I spent a lot of time enthusiastically taking photos of the buffalo working in the fields. Whilst this was fair enough I got a few odd looks off the locals whilst taking pictures of chickens. This did make me consider whether I would think it was normal to take 10 pictures of a scrawny chicken at home. Possible not. I stopped! We stopped at a view point called the half moon which was also really impressive.
Cycling aside we did lots of souvenir shopping and just relaxed. We got to have a look at a man comorant fishing as well. Some of the group went on a night time and fishing trip and insist they met the actual man from the HSBC adverts. I was not so fortunate. After a relaxing few days we got another overnight train (you've got to love them) to the Hong Kong border. Once in Hong Kong we travelled to our last hotel which was bliss. The most comfortable bed I've ever slept in with huge pillow and a flat screen TV. Very weird to be watching Step up (classy stuff) with the sky scrapers of Hong Kong visible outside the window. Considering we will be spending the next couple of months in hostels the room was well appreciated. Once we finally dragged ourselves away from our lovely hotel room the next day we left to go to Hong Kong island and take the tram up the peak. The view was impressive but it was a bit smoggy. The view was nicer from the ferry on the way over actually.
The tourist past over it all started going a little wrong on the shopping front. I blame the stress of the email debacle. Either way I now have far more clothes and cannot carry my back pack without scuttling along in a crab like fashion. Me and amy decided we needed a ruthless cull of all non-essential items. I managed to throw away one vest top. Something has to give. Having finished shopping at the late night markets at about half eleven at night we struggled back to out new hostel. Oh, how the mightly fall. However, whilst we were a tad apprehensive at changing from luxury to 11 pounds a night we were pleasantly surpised. No flat screen TV but it was nice and clean. Some others in the group had a hostel with a bathroom where the shower head was over a toilet! We didn't arrive back until about quarter to twelve and the guy took pity and gave us a room with out own bathroom (which we didn't pay for). It had a bath to stand in whilst having a shower and everything. No having a shower whilst sitting on the toilet for us! In retrospect we probably just looked very very bedraggled!
Today we are relaxing (am in a coffee shop with internet and papers and caffeine!) before getting an overnight flight to New Zealand. The plane stops in Sydney so appears to take about 18hrs but I am informed there is a good 5 hr time difference.
I hope everyone is well. Thank-you again for all your messages, they are very much appreciated. I will blog again in New Zealand!
Amyx
