On the 26th we were up at 4.30am (!) and left Dar es Salaam for Baubab Camp, named after the "upside down" trees that are prolific in the area. Apparently some live for up to 4,000 years! The campsite was really nice and in the evening we got to sit back and look at the stars, spotting the milky way and about a million other stars - loads more than back in London!! :-)
On Sunday 27th we left the camp after pancakes for breakfast (yum!) and a lie in (9.30!) and drove to a site where prehistoric stone tools were found - I think it was called Ismilia? There was also some amazing scenery there - huge sand pillars caused by erosion in a valley, which was pretty awesome.
On Monday 28th we left camp at 6am and drove until lunchtime to get to Rungwe, where we stayed in the Landmark Hotel, which was a bit Fawlty Towers like, in that you walked past a room only to see the staff having a blazing row, and quizzical looks when you requested a towel! Outside the hotel was a big local market which we walked around with a local, who was very keen to chat and show us the sights - and much to our surprise didn't try to sell us something, or take us to his "brother's" shop! We had a great curry for dinner which JJ cooked, and then had the local gin - Konyagi - which is basically a cane spirit which they dish out in huge quantities!
