We went to the Ottawa School of Art today to check out an exhibition by visiting artist Sophie Jodoin. The works were a series of black and white drawings called 'Small Dramas and Little Nothings', are part of a larger body of work called 'War Series'. The drawings were in the style of sketches/graffiti/'comic style silhouettes', and included war imagery. They are the 'Juxtaposition of war and childhood trauma'.
There were roughly 40 drawings all done on the same size paper (maybe slightly smaller than A4) and all in the same size frames. The drawings were so small- I'd say no bigger than 10x10cm, and yet they were all so incredibly striking! It amazed me how something so small and so simply done could evoke such emotion. They were done using cut outs from newspapers/magazines, some of which were placed under a sheet of paper similar to tracing paper so it made it look quite grainy and ghost like, with charcoal drawings over the top- jet black, and the contrast was quite creepy, even more so given the subject nature. There were drawings of children with missing limbs, animals and children with bags over their heads, a girl pushing a pram with a man's leg inside instead of a doll. It was said about the artist: 'she explores classic themes on the figure: mortality, aging, lonliness, cruelty, spoiled innocence and emptiness', and that they (the works) 'evoke untold stories and are a testament to our everyday violence'.
The artist lives and works in Montreal and her work has been displayed all over the world.
It was an extremely moving exhibition with a strong message behind it. It was quite small and it was free, yet it was one of the most meaningful I've seen! Not personally but just the message behind it.
After this we went to starbucks and Kelly actually got recognised by the lady that served her as we've been in there so much! :) haha. The lady that served me said I had a nice accent. I told her we were making our way through the holiday classics. Today I treated myself to a peppermint white chocolate mocha and a slice of lemon and poppyseed cake! yum yum :)
