Sunday 1 November
It's another big day. We get up, eat and head to the louvre hoping to see the Mona Lisa for free. On the way in we were serenaded by an accordion player in the metro. A great start.
Unfortunately we were misinformed and for some reason it wasn't a free day. We got some pictures of the building and headed out. We walk down a very stylish and expensive street. I get a cool Paris coin bracelet. There are so many small tiny cars here! Lots of smart cars, Toyota IQ's and fiat 500's. Electric plug ins too. I think they are cool. We see some awesome architecture on the way to the moulin rouge windmill and the church on the hill. Time flies while we check our churches and cemeteries. We stop for lunch and then continue down the stairs from the church to catch the metro but we are accosted by bracelet threading beggars from Africa. The get you to hold one end while they thread and then they tie on you and ask for money. I tried my best to dissuade the guy before he started, but he was too persuasive. He tells me he is from Nairobi and had a brother who has 5 kids who cry in the night. I have no money and tell him to ask my husband, who turns out is successful in saying no! Malcolm heard his guy say to another that 'he'll show him how it's done'. This made mal more convinced to give him no money.
Off to the Eiffel Tower and up those stairs! It's a great experience. As we approach the tower there is a group of Africans running for their lives. Last night they where everywhere trying to sell various variations of Eiffel towers and flying light thingys. Clearly it must be illegal and when the cops come off they run! We see it again as we are leaving and a group of cops on bikes. Next it's the lady liberty. There is a lovely built up walk down the centre of the river to it. Next: the catacombs. We stand in line for about 40min but it's interesting. So many bones and skulls stacked up in the old underground quarry. A little freaky. On the way home We stop by a statue and get some food. We go into a patisserie and get dime pastries. We don't get all out packages and they call out to us as we walk away. All packages in hand we enjoy the rest of a quiet evening. Morning will be early.
This doesn't begin to explain the wonder that is Paris! It's a very special place for sure!
