It was time for the party island, also known as Koh Panghan! We headed to the pier on Saturday morning and sat around waiting for the boat with lots and lots of other backpackers getting ready to sample the top partying of Thailand. After a few hours on a boat that they had definitely let on a million more people than it could cater for, we arrived on the island and were greeted with blasting music from a taxi inviting us to numerous parties. A short taxi ride away and we arrived at our hostel for the next 5 nights. For Thailand the hostel was very pricey but all prices go up around the full moon party and we had been recommended it from a girl we met in Aus. Whilst checking in another taxi pulled up and sat in the back was Bron!! Our friend that we had travelled NZ and Aus was coming to meet us for our time in Thailand. A big hug later and all checked in we headed to the restaurant next door for a bite to eat and a much needed catch up! After chatting for hours about our travels we spent the rest of the evening meeting everyone else in our 22 bed dorm and then it was time to get ready for our first night on Koh Panghan. Exciting!
We headed to the hostel bar which was a street bar outside, chatted to lots of people and met a lad who lived in Cosby! Did ask if he played golf dad but I'm afraid he was more of a football fan. Lots of music, drinking and games went on and then we headed down to the beach to see what it was like down there. We then spent the rest of the night dancing on the beach at a bar called Catcus bar, as well as having a couple of go's at the limbo under a rope of fire, I was very careful I promise! We were more fascinated by how strong the Thai guys are and how low they could limbo. All in all our first night on Koh Panghan was a success and we knew we were going to have lots of fun here!
The next day we woke up fairly late, grabbed some breakfast/lunch and headed to the beach. I was expecting a pretty horrible, litter fuelled beach but was pleasantly surprised when we saw crystal blue water and white sand! Not like the ones you get on European party islands. We spent the day in the sea and sunbathing, getting lots of rest ready for our 2nd night on the island and the Coral Bungalows famous pool party! After some drinks at the hostel we headed to the pool party which was crazy! Lots of people dancing in the pool, jumping in and having a good time. We were straight in the water when we arrived and spent quite a while in there until we decided it was too gross to stay, we quickly dried off and headed home. Another great night! Again the same routine of a lay in and some breakfast happened the next day. We then went to chill by a pool some of our friends were staying at, definitely nice to be sand free for the day! It was soon time for dinner and then to get ready for our 3rd night out and tonight was the jungle party! People had told us that the jungle party was more fun that the actual full moon party so we had high expectations! We headed in a taxi to the middle of nowhere and it was just like a jungle. There were fluorescent colours and neon lights everywhere, lots of people and very loud music! We had such a good night watching the fire-throwers, dancing with everyone from our hostel and taking lots of photos. They say time flies when you're having fun and this night it definitely did, we ended up getting into bed around 5.30am so a much needed lie in was needed the next day!!
The day had arrived for the full moon party! We spent the day being very lazy and having a day out of the sun. We went to buy our fluorescent coloured tops and body paint ready to get prepared for the night ahead of us. Around Haad Drin beach (where the full moon party takes place) it was a lot busier than the days before. The streets seemed packed with lots of people dressed in bright colours and drinking from buckets. We got ready with everyone from our dorm and then got painted up. Lots of swirls, patterns and dots later and we were ready to party! The street bar of our hostel was packed with everyone on their way to the beach and the atmosphere was amazing. We were very sensible and organised what to do if one of us got separated etc before we headed to the beach. When we arrived at the beach there were people EVERYWHERE! From then on it was pretty much one big beach party moving along the beach when we decided on a change of scenery or different type of music. We had to have a food stop at one point during the night and then became very tired but were determined to make the famous sunrise! We powered through and after a sit down on the beach on the waters edge the sun slowly started to rise! We made it!
It was then a quick walk back to our hostel and clambered into bed for a long sleep. Needless to say we spent most of Wednesday recovering from the 4 nights of partying, looking through people's pictures from the night before and watching a film. We then went out for our last meal with Nadine, a girl we had met diving and spent our Koh Panghan time with, said goodbye and headed to bed for yet another early start of 5.45am (this time it was getting up at 5am and not getting in from partying at that time) where we would be getting our boat to Ko Lanta, a very chilled island!
We both LOVED our experience of Koh Panghan and I think its one place we definitely will be returning, anyone that fancies a rave on the beach is more than welcome to join us next time lots of love meg and amy xxxxxxx
