After an early start we got back on the bus and had a long journey to Waitomo a little town where the bus goes so we can go caving. We booked ourselves to do the Black abyss trip as we were told from everyone we met its amazin, a five hire trip through a limestone cave. After getting into our wetsuits our goupr of nine headed for the caves with our instructors Inga and Matty and first stop was absailing. After a brief practice run we were up and absailing alone down a 35m high drop that we could just fit through and although we attempted to make it look cool jumping back and forth from the rock like in the films it definatley didn't work but we made it too the bottom in one piece. Next a walk through small tunnels and we lined up to fly down a zip wire in the dark and the wouldnt tell us what was at the end. So we were harnessed in and Asa went first as soon as he went a big bang went off and we literally didnt know what happened to him but Megs was up next and like a brave girl she was off! Turns out its just an instructor banging a tube to scare you which works but was fun to watch everyone be scared! It was so cold down in the cave and our wetsuits were already wet but they were nice and gave us hot chocolate and flapjack before making us jump into the water that ran through the cave. We had big tubes around us (rubber rings) and thank god neither of us fell out but it was cold and we still were dunked under! After floating in our tubes waiting for the others we did some mini excercises to keep warm as we were shivering sooo bad and then it was story time. We learnt about the glowworms which live in the cave, they are actually maggot poo with salava hanging from them but they look like little pretty florescent fairy lights in the cave. We all attached ourselves to each other and went down the water as a big worm watching the gloworms. After squeezing through some very tight tunnels, sliding head first down a mini water slide in the cave, and walking through water waist high with rocks at your feet no one broke anything so we were now about to climb 3 waterfalls! Our instructors told us where to place our feet but we didnt have a harness so literally held on for our lives! It was amazing though and we soon forgot how cold we were, the final climb was the easiest and we climbed our way out of the cave, being slightly blinded by the day light again and then it was time for soup and bagels so hyperthermia didnt set in! Such a fun experience and we bought the pictures that were taken along the way so we can show off to you guys! After a hot shower we were pretty tired so played a few card games and went to bed ready for Rotorua the next day.
