After leaving Meloburne at 8pm the previous night we finally arrived in Sydney at 12.30pm the next day, after a 5 hour wait in Canberra bus station ar 4 am!! Feeling pretty gross but surprisngly quite awake as we had both slept quite wellduring the night we headed to onto a train and then a busm, finally reaching Bondi!
First impressionswere good, the sun was shining, nice hostel and the beach was heaving. We were planning on having a BBQ for Christmas Day with our friends so headed off to the supermarket with Sadie and Bron (our friends from NZ we had met up with again) to stock up on food. A couple of hours later and a lot of food purchases, we went and sat on the ebach with our santa hats on getting in the Chrsitmas spirit for a bit and met some lads to play a game of frisbee with.
We decided to go for a few drinks in the evening so after drinking the free wine in our hostel for a bit we met Sadie and Bron and went to a bar along Bondi called "Ravisis". The bar was pretty posh and we sat on the balcony with out santa hats on. This is when the rain started....and didnt stop!! We danced to the live band but unfortunately no Christmas songs were played so after the band had finished, people started singing their own christmas songs, including "All I want for Christmas". We then headed back to the hostel to get a earlyish night before our Christmas BBQ on the beach!
Waking up to grey skies wasnn't really how we had imagined Christmas in Australia, but still I think you can say we definitely made the most of it. We were treated to sausage and eggs for breakfast at the hostel and then made our way down to the empty beach. We knew the forecast was for rain later on and seeing as the beach was dead we found a little hut on the grass with a table and benches to sit at. Jake and Dean (other friends from NZ) and Bron and Sadie found us and we chatted about what we had all done since we'd been apart. Then we decided to get all of the food and decorations out, this consisted of Xmas paper plates, xmas table cloth, xmas napkins, crakcers and lots and lots of food! By now the rain was puring down but our hut seemed to be staying relatively dry. The BBQ was a little hard work but not long after we had all had our Christmas burgers and hot dogs and of course not forgetting our mince pies. Everyone was walking past looking pretty jealous of our Xmas party going on. We even managed to run into the sea later on in the afternoon in our santa hats in the pouring rain!
Later on in the afternoonw e headed back to the hostel to try and dry off and our hostel was full of everyone partying so we joined in with them and our other friends came to us to spend Christmas evening together. A couple of skype calls later and lots of dancing and it was time for bed. I think we can both say thyat it wasnt the Christmas we imagined or what we were used to but it was a amazing, very different Chrsitmas day (the roast dinner next Christmas will be the best one ever though!!)
Boxing day started with pancakes and a skype call to fran to wish her Merry Christmas. We then headed to watch some of the Sydney to Hobart boat race. We took our left overs from the BBQ and had a picnic wathcing the sailing boats fo past us. We then spent the afternoon chilling in the hostel watching films and chatting with people.
Overall, we loved out Christmas in Bondi and were now getting very excited to spend NYE in Sydney!
Lots of festive love Meg and Amy xxxxx
