The place where we are staying, The Foley's Creek, is more like a cabin. It is away from town so very quiet and peaceful. It is a self contained so you provide the food and they have dishes, pots and other necessary supplies. There where many huge rabbits around. There was no phone or TV service but Al did watch a couple of movies.
Today we went to Able Tasman for hiking and beach time. This meant driving to the pick up place to meet the bus taking us to the boat. Man oh, oh man, oh man, this was not a comfortable ride. The road is narrow, winding, as they have been, and the bus is huge. I sat, unknowly, on the drop off side.I was leaning inward as much as possible and was squeezing Al's hand. We where amazed and grateful not to have met a car coming the other way for the bus often took both lanes to make the curves.
Please keep the prayers coming for safety.
The trip we chose was called the Great Day Out. The trip begins with a boat ride that goes almost the length of the park. Our boat was The Vista, a new boat that started service in December. They beach the boat and then send out the gangplank to board. We cruised from Kaiteriteri to Totaranui with stops along the way. One stop is at the Tonga Island Seal Colony. We saw four seals there taking in the sun. At the Awaroa Bay stop we had a dolphin hang around for awhile and a baby stringray swam by.
We got off the boat at Anchorage on the return trip and sat on the beach to eat lunch. There are huts for rent and where nice for those who wanted to camp. The water is so beautiful and the lovely sound of the surf was comforting. I could of sat there longer just enjoying the sights and sounds but we had 11-12 km to hike out.
The trail started with ascending some but certanly not like the Tongariro. There are many vistas with spectacular views. The water is teal color and the kayakers added more color. We took some time off and hiked down to a beach just to relax and enjoy the beauty of this part of the world. The wind was up and a bit cold so after about half an hour we returned to the trail with 6 km, about two hours to go.
Back into town we got some Algerian takeaway and went back to our cabin Dinner, wine, and a movie finished the day
