In the morning we ate our peanut butter on toast and headed to Cathedrel cove beach. It was so beautiful and so much fun to run barefoot in the sand. The water was a bit cold so didn't get to wet. Time there was the spirit lifter we needed. The hike to the beach was not difficult at all. We took the trail through the puripuri (sp) tress not like we would know what they where. When we returned to the parking lot there was a lady with her vender truck selling food and drink. I was so glad to see her and we both enjoyed a smoothie.
Our destination was National Park where we would spend two nights. On the way there we went the Agrodome, which is just outside of Rotorua. Our original plan was to go zorbing, this is where you ride down a hill in a clear sphere ball. Once there however, the $25 it would cost for a 45 second ride seemed a bit much. Instead we went to the sheep show that was fantastic. They displayed the 19 different kinds of sheep and you could pet each one. They gave a history about each kind and about the wool. Each sheep had its own place on the stage with a feed dish. When they brought the sheep dogs out using whistle and voice commands the dogs run up the stage and across the backs of the sheep in the last row and two dogs on the row below. The dogs would stand on the backs of he sheep and just stay there.
Another deomonstration with the sheep dogs showed how they herd the sheep. They had to use ducks for this because the sheep would jump off the stage. Outside they gave a demonstration using lambs and the dog did well in following the voice and whistle commands.
We still had a ways to go and our route took us by Lake Taupo that is 235 sq miles and was formed by an volcanic explosion over thousands of years. We learned that this eruption was the largest in the world at that time. Also the ash turned day into night. I was to go fishing here after our hiking as you will read about below but the weather turned bad and we had to cancel. The trout range about three pounds
