The National Humboldt Penguin Reserve consists of two islands. Isla Choros & Isla Damas. The reserve is reached by little fishing boats. Getting into the boat proved a spot difficult for me as the water was ridiculously choppy so one moment the boat was just a step away & the next, lower than my little legs can reach. As a result I fell flat on my behind!!
We chugged around Isla Choros first & were treated to Humboldt Penguins waddling up & down the cliffs together with various cormorants, some all jet black & others with colourful red beaks like toucans.
Around the islands are small outcrops of rocks. On each a very large sea lion (they can weigh up to 300lbs) ruled with his harem of 8 to 12 females. They are overwhelmingly stinky!!!
The male sea lion is very protective of his patch & we subjected to some very loud grunts as we sailed near. The male is also very jealous & therefore keeps each of his females pregnant. Poor girls!
