Hi everyone,
I know I haven't written since I was deployed first to the Good Friday Tornado response effort in St. Louis and then to Joplin immediately after the F5 destroyed a 6mi path there. While I was there, working long shifts with few days off and trying to impose order on the aftermath of terror in those towns, I didn't have the time or energy to compose a coherent blog entry. Now that I'm serving on an energy efficiency project in beautiful Grand Junction, CO, I plan on trying to put those experiences and emotions into words.
For tonight though, I wanted to share this video because I think it expresses exactly why national service is so important for our youth, for all our economic classes and for those of every shape, size and color.

My team and I just got back from watching the first of a few fireworks displays our new town has to offer. We played frisbee, sang "God Bless America" out of tune and chatted about our summer plans after AmeriCorps. Looking around, I was reminded (probably for the first time since Joplin) that I was with a group of individuals who represented the best of our country and the reasons we fight to keep it free and creative and compassionate.

June Happy 4th! I'm proud of you too, Julie. Just got back from France, and while it was wonderful, there's no place like the good ole U.S of A! Also, please don't miss Enstrom Candies in Grand Junction! Absolutely fabulous candy!
Mary Great post, Julie. Can't wait to see you! Mary
