Day 4 - New York
We didn't have to check out of our hotel until 11am, so we had quite a relaxed start to the day. The reason we are changing hostels is because for the last night in NYC we wanted to be close to Greenwich Village, so we are staying in a hostel in Chelsea. It's the hostel I stayed in last year. It's not the nicest, but the location is great. Before we moved hostels, we went to Central Park again. Still haven't seen anywhere close to all of it. We sat down for a while and had acoffee (our 4th Starbucks of the trip - we are keeping count) and there was a group of summer camp kids there who were doing some very strange team building exercises. Again, lots of high fives were exchanged. Those Americans do like to high five.
We went back to the hostel to pick up our bags and take them to the next hostel. This was NOT a fun task in this weather. It is so so humid that you can barely breathe. At least we managed to check in straight away.
The guy at reception seemed almost obsessed that we were leaving too early the next day to be able to get the free breakfast. It's not like we are going to change our train for it.
After soom sitting in the company of our new best friend the air conditioning machine, we went to the salad bar that me and my dad went to almost every day last year. It is under near management and dare I say it...it's even better! After eating a lot of salad, we went back to the hostel and got our backpacks ready to leave tomorrow.
Then it was time to explore my favourite part of NYC - Greenwich Village. It wasn't so much exploring as we had a planned agenda and that was to find the building from "Friends" and to find the stairs to Carries apartment in Sex and the City. Got a bit lost trying to find the friends building but we found it. It's a bit unimpressive, but then it is just a building, but it was good to see the building that stole 9 years of my viewing life. We then found Carries steps and we also came across something else too. We walked straight onto a film set where Jennifer Aniston is filming her new film "The Bounty". We didn't see her, but she was in one of the vans there. Was cool to see an "on location" film set though.
Had a bit more of a walk through the village. I love it so much as it is an endless supply of shoe shops, quirky boutiques and hippy cafes. We then headed over to Washington Square park which has a big fountain and a lot of people and just hung out there for a while. There was a women playing football with a kid and a few other guys (who seemed to be here body guards) and people kept coming up to her and asking her for hr autograph. I recognised her, but I can't think who she is. I took a stealth photo of her though.
We then walked up to Union Square which is a hang out spot for the people who go to NYU, and also for most of New York it seemed. It was packed full of skaters, break dancers, street performers and groups of people chatting and having a coffee - the group we fell into.
As much as we would have liked to stay there all night, even at 10pm it was far too humid still, so we went to the supermarket and back to the salad bar to stock up on food for tomorrows train journey.
Spent the rest of the evening in the hostel, but going to sleep now as we are up at 5am.
Am really sad to be leaving NYC, but looking forward to moving on to a new place too. It was good to do things in NYC that I didn't have time to do last year.
