Salvador, Brazil
Greetings everyone!
Well, i´m sure you´ve all been waiting with bated breath at my first blog post!
Let´s start with BA - i believe it stands for Bloody Awful. After a 2 hour delay they ran out of food on the plane!! And anyone who knows me, knows i´m not a happy camping when hungry. Luckily they ´found´´ a spare meal before i punched one of the cabin crew in the face - only joking! I was far too happy at being away for 8 months to get too irrate!
The next challenge was getting to the hostel A) alive and B) without getting mugged! as ive been told some horror stories about Rio. However i got chatting to an Ozzie couple who were sat behind me on the plane who were going to the same hostel which was a result so we shared a cab. We arrived in Santa teresa which was pretty much a ghetto, got out the cab and had to climb about 100 stairs to the hostel!
We arrived about midnight and once inside i didn´t waste any time in getting the ´low down´ on Rio. I got chatting to a Brazilian guy called Tiago who was my bezzie mate for the next 2 days. He very kindly gave me a guided tour of Rio the following day and as i can speak - now 6 words in portugese i was very happy. Rio has a metro - similar to our tube but far easier. We went to Copocabana - nothing to write home about and Ipanema which is apparently a nice area in Rio.
I wanted to get a flight out of Rio to either Argentina or the North east coast as recommended by my new pal. However if you are not a local and have a foreign credit card this is pretty impossible so we had to go to one of the local airline offices which was fine, much to my relief. Note to travellers - either book bus journeys or book your internal flights from the UK. The downside is your a restricted to your schedule, but at least you can leave!
We then had Friday night in Rio which is Samba night and the place to go is Lapa where people hang out on the street under archways, drinking and dancing. Hmm bit like a friday night for the schoolies in the uk? Drinking is pretty expensive unless it´s beer. We had a few drinks a bit of a party and then headed home. I was just glad to get back with everything in tact as there is defintely an under current in Rio that made me feel uneasy.
The next day another Brit and myelf went to see JC (Christo statue) which was pretty impressive. We got back to the hostel in the afternoon and everytime i walked 5 yards i got chatting with someone new. The people in the hostel were amazing and i felt very at home. I was sad to leave the hostel, but not Rio.
I arrived in Salvador yesterday and as i´m writing this i´ve just been invited to a sreet party! Salvador is very cool.Very pretty and colonial with a strong african influence. I´ll be updating again soon - i may have some stories to share after tonight :-)
