I had time for 2 days in Puerto Iguazu before heading to Buenos Aires. I knew this would give me just enough time to visit the Iguazu Falls in both the Argentinian and Brazilian National Parks.
The falls straddle the border of Brazil and Argentina as the river is the natural line between the countries. There are over 250 separate waterfalls along almost 3km of the Rio Iguazu where the river falls off the edge of a 70m high cliff. It's impossible to do justice to the sheer scale of the falls here as I'll never be able to describe just how ridiculously huge and beautiful they are. It has the greatest average annual flow of any waterfall in the world and was apparently featured in the last Indiana Jones film, although not having seen it yet, I couldn't tell you at what point.
I spent a day walking around the network of walkways in the Argentian side. The walkways go right along the tops of a number of the falls and right up to the Garganta del Diablo (the Devil's Throat) which is a huge semicircle of cliff with 1800 cubic metres of water flowing over it every second. That is a lot of water.
The next day I visited the Brazilian side where you can see the falls you walked over the previous day from the other side and better appreciate the vast scale of them.
The staff at the visitor centre there were campaigning for the falls to be one of the new seven wonders of the world (apparently there's a competition and you can vote for your favourite). I think they will definitely have my vote as I can't think of anywhere on earth I've ever visited more beautiful.
