With another long night flight behind us, we finally reached Bangkok at 8am (1am UK). Luckily for us we didn't have to face another exhausting day carrying our bags on our backs, as we were able to store them in the airport (24 hours for 2quid-you can't complain with that!). After riding in a taxi that (to put simply) scared the life out of us, meandering through the overly hectic roads, we got to our destination. We chose a place called Koh San Road (mainly as we both thought we'd heard the name before) at about 11am. Busy is a word I use lightly here, the place was packed! Market after market after market. It's hard to fully describe the atmosphere of the place! It certainly wasn't the cleanest of places, one feature was a lovely dead rat on the side of the street! We stopped for some well needed food - Thai noodles and prawns - then began venturing through the markets. After rejecting about 100 offers for a ride on a tuk tuk, we'd bought a few items (at a ridiculously low price) and we were exhausted! We wandered out and found a small park area near an old fort next to the river! It was nice just to be able to sit down!
Mid afternoon came and we had had enough of the stuffy overcrowded streets and decided to try to head back to the airport! After meeting a rather friendly Thai lady, who apparently taught English even when she could hardly speak a word herself, who was over excitedly telling us about the local attractions, (she was quite sweet, even if she was lying through her teeth) we finally got a taxi. It easily took over an hour, maybe 2 to get to the airport due to the business of the roads!
We had plenty of time to waste until our next flight which would take us to our next destination! We were exhausted! After a long wander around the airport and some much needed food in departures (subway - can't complain) we were off on Bangkok Airways on a very short flight to Koh Samui!
Some people say first impressions are important, Koh Samui's first impression was impressive indeed! A small airport with palm trees, wooden hut like buildings for the terminals and the tiniest baggage claim I've ever seen - it just looked so cute! Felt much better already after surviving Bangkok! A short mini bus ride away and we reached our home for the next 6 days - Al's Hut (no Alys does not actually own it) a small pathway with white huts either side of the rooms! (See photos)
After a very long sleep we awoke at lunch time ready to go to the beach - great timing as about 5 minutes into our beach time a wonderful tropical rainstorm began! We waited out the storm and went for a walk along the beach to see what was around. We saw 20 or so sea front restaurants all offering fresh fish that had been caught in the bay that day.
This evening we enjoyed a full fresh fish selection feast along the seafront, couldn't get more idyllic than that! It's amazing how cheap everything is here! Food platter of: squid, crab, giant prawns, sword fish and cockles with rice, salad and bread, 5 cocktails and desert for 40 quid, bargain!
That's 1 more day down and plenty more to go!
