Got the boys sorted with their Harleys.Pete and Martin were really nervous, mainly because each one weighs about 800 lbs. Using the wonderful Tom Tom we lead them out of Dallas and onto the Freeway. We were on our way to Amarillo and we have ourselves a convoy!!!Periodically checked the phone internet to see how Hamilton was doing in the Grand Prix - can't believe I am operating all these electronic gadgets. What a shame he didn't make it, but what an achievement to come 2nd in the championship. After about 100 miles we stopped at a Subway Service Station to fill up with gas and have lunch. The bikers were exhilarated.Pete said it was great when they were going along but the bike was hard to control when slowing down or stopping. He had been attacked by a huge flying tumbleweed as it whipped his leg. Apart from selling gas Subway did food, toys, and clothes and even had a case of dangerous looking knives and a chain with a spiky ball on the end. It was about 100 degrees with a hot wind so Robert and Alun replaced their helmets with bandanas and shed some clothes. The next stop to stretch our legs was at Quanah - city of legends, where we were told to watch out for snow and black ice in Amarillo. We thought they must be mad we had just left 100 degrees. We passed lots of freight trains, some of them double stacked with containers; it seems the standard length is approximately 1.3 miles. The bikers liked the trains as they protected them from the wind. They said it would be great until there was a gap in the containers and then the wind would whip through and send them sideways. We passed a few cattle ranches and fields and fields of cotton. Now and again you come across an Adult Video Store in the middle of nowhere with a few trucks outside. This seemed a bit strange as there are churches of all denominations everywhere. There were long stretches of the journey when we couldn't get any phone reception and lots of small towns with a garage and a few motels. Some of the motels looked run down and were as cheap as 30 dollars a night. It started to get dark and we even began to feel the force of the wind in the car. When we arrived at the motel the bikers were absolutely frozen. It was 4 degrees and with the wind chill factor it was about minus 4 - haven't been that cold for ages.It was the wind, it just went right though you.Off came the flip flops and on came the fur lined boots. There is a place advertised everywhere that does a 72 oz steak that you get free if you can eat it all. All too tired and cold to bother so we fought our way through the wind to a Mexican just behind the motel.Apart from being frozen to death the two young lads were enjoying themselves and there followed a lot of boy bike talk about pistons etc. I think I will wait until we reach California where it is warmer and they have a few hundred miles under their belt before I have a go on the back of their Harley.
