Our flight was delayed by nearly an hour as the plane was late coming into Sydney but I don’t think we arrived much later than scheduled. The flight was pretty bumpy at times through the night & sleep was broken by flights attendants walking through the plane checking seat belts. But, at least we got some sleep. The only time my cold bothered me was the pain in my ears coming into land.
Coming through customs was easy with very little waiting time. As soon as we walked out of the airport I saw a lady holding a white board with my name on it. She was driving us to our hotel. She was very friendly and gave us some great tips on traffic, food and sights to see.
Our hotel, The Modern, is beautiful. The staff were very efficient from getting bags out of the car, checking us in & swapping out the feather pillows. Nothing was too much trouble. We have a beautiful view of the marina from the balcony.
We decided to go into Waikiki today and found a bus to take us there. We wandered around for a while and when we got too hot we headed for the Moana Surfrider Hotel. We were lucky enough to get a beach front table under the shade of the enormous banyan tree so we sat there for a few hours drinking cocktails and admiring the view. We were entertained by a Hawaiian man playing a ukulele and singing. The day was mostly overcast and humid. The sun appeared at times there didn’t seem to be any point hanging around for the sunset as it was behind the clouds.
Out on the street, the torches were being lit outside the shops and hotels. They look great and really contribute to the island atmosphere.
After looking in a few shops for Hawaiian shirts, we caught the bus back to the Ala Moana shopping centre near our hotel and found somewhere for dinner.
We saw a hop on hop off bus today so we thought that might be a good start for us tomorrow to get our bearings before we pick up a car on Wednesday.
