So, 30 days and counting until the big summer starts!!! I am really excited, getting a little nervous, about a lot of things, most of them not related to me.
I am worried about certain members in my travel group participating in ethnocentrism on the trip and exoticism. During the presentations of what each member of our group hopes to do a study of while in Senegal, some members of the group gave me that impression. Right now, my concern is that some members of the group are going on this trip simply because they have the money. While there is nothing wrong with that, I hope that this will be a life-changing experience for me. Half of making this trip a life-changing experience though, is wanting that out of the trip, I think.
I am going to really miss you all, my family, and friends while I'm gone, but I'll be back soon... I really won't see a lot of you until I get back probably, June 9 I fly back into the U.S. so I will see everyone once I'm back, and some of you, I hope before I leave. I know I haven't left yet so it might seem silly for me to start this before I leave, but I want all of you to know that I'm going to choose that this be the best way to contact me while I'm gone. I'm going to really attempt to never access facebook while I'm gone, and to sparsely check e-mail to stay in contact with folks. So, if you want to contact me while I'm gone, I think you can e-mail me here, or send me a message here on something called my message board. Something like that so let's all go ahead and use those things instead of spamming me so much that I don't have time to delete all of your precious, sweet, thoughtful, wonderful e-mails and notes that I know you will all be sending me.
Also, I will not have access to a phone really, except for emergencies. If you get a bizarree call at some very odd hour, it's probably going to be me, checking in from a tele centre in Dakar, if you have any other urge to call me, you're welcome to leave me a voicemail, but I will not hear it until I get back to the U.S., I'm sure.
Most importantly, I love you all dearly and will make sure to have lots of fun on your behalf while in Senegal!
