Here we are in beautiful, beautiful Switzerland. We are in Interlaken, a gorgeous little town between two lakes and surrounded by snow covered alps. It is just stunning.
Our little tent is getting it's first outing here in Switzerland (accommodation is far too expensive for anything else!). Our tent is tiny. I thought perhaps it was the smallest tent ever, but then 2 bike riders had to come stay last night and out-do us with an only slightly smaller tent. I've since named our tent Mohammed, after Gul Mohammed, who according to wikipedia is the second smallest man in the world! But it fits me, Dan and our backpacks (just!) and that's all we need.
We are basing ourselves in Interlaken and doing day trips all over Switzerland, which is easier than packing up the tent everyday to move on to a new city. So yesterday it was off to Bern, the capital of Switzerland. Bern was a beautiful city and reminded me of a smaller version of Melbourne - lots of tiny alleys filled with cafes and shops. We wandered the town, hiked up a massive hill to a rose garden and spent lots of time laughing at 2 baby bears chasing each other and playing in the bear pit in the centre of town.
Switzerland is very expensive! But we are finding ways to save money. We did not pay the extra to get a campsite with power, so today when our iPods needed charging, we found a random powerpoint outside a shopping centre, plugged in and sat there on the ground waiting for them to charge. There are many beautiful chocolate shops here, but like everything else, they are also incredibly expensive. So we walk in and I savour the delicious smell of the chocolate, then we leave and eat the squashed, melted mars bars and kit kats that we got in Aldi in Germany! As we have no fridge we have to buy cold beer as we want it from the camping ground shop. This was adding up (gone is the ridiculously cheap beer of Germany) so I've since brought a very cheap bottle of red, that I drink from my big, collapsible camping cup. Strangely, it tastes like spaghetti bolognaise, but hey, it's better than no grog at all! And all this means we are staying on budget and can spend some more time in this beautiful country!
