Hello friends and family! As many of you already know, I am leaving in a few short days for an extended trip to Southeast Asia. This is my first attempt and test run at a travel blog. Bear with me please….I’ve never done this before….
So…where to begin….
When I first decided to do this particular journey and began to tell the people in my life about it, I supposed I expected some mixed reactions. And I got ‘em. Some were excited for me, some were terrified for me, and some were all together against me going. And I understood their concerns, their trepidation. For me, this trip is about fun, adventure, and I think a bit of catharsis. In short, I am doing this trip for me and me alone. I don’t expect everyone to get it. It’s okay if they don’t.
My plan is to fly to Hanoi, Vietnam and head south through Laos and Cambodia. Then over to Thailand and down to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia before heading home on Christmas Eve. Five new countries to check out. Who wouldn’t want to do this? Did I mention that I am going alone?
My expectations for this journey are to wander new cities, meet new people, and just experience something different than my apartment, my couch, my city….for some, this alone is not enough to just drop your life for two months, pack a bag, and get on a plane for 20 hours. For me, it’s more than enough.
On a side note (my close family and friends can skip this bit)….for those who believe that truly embracing a new culture means eating only local cuisine, I do not share your sentiments. I plan to eat the things that look tasty (pics to follow…just for you Mshell). If this means pho in Vietnam and pizza in Cambodia, so be it. I do not eat weird things. That’s just me.
This blog is meant to help me keep track of the places I go and people I meet along the way, as well as trying to keep in touch with family and friends back home. I will update you guys as much as possible, hopefully with pictures. Until I see you again, I love you all and hope you stay well.
