The picture is our receipt for our room, i love that they called us Mr British because they dealt with Liam. The plan for today was to go to Schwedagon Pagoda which is one of the top sights in Myanmar.
So we got up, had breakfast at the hostel, which was simple but nice still and then headed out to find a public bus to the pagoda. On the way we walked past all the men who exchange money on the street, like a black market, Liam changed $100 and got a better rate than the hostel gave us but it also meant he had 87'000 kyat in 1000 notes haha. Then we got on the bus, there are four men working on the bus; one stands at the door and helps you on while shouting Burmese instructions to the driver, another comes round and takes money off you, one obviously drives, and the other one stands at the front window and signals to other drivers to move as most vehicles here are right-hand drive but they drive on the right side, pretty dangerous!!! But who knew it could take that many people? Haha!
When we got off the bus, we could see the top of the pagoda so walked in that direction: it was only when we got there that we looked around and realised we could see an even bigger one!! So we had a walk round that one and then walked over a bridge to the actual pagoda. I'm not usually impressed by stuff like this, but the place is incredible especially when you think its covered in gold and diamonds. The most beautiful thing for me though was the whole feeling of the place; the pagoda itself has incense burning all around it and people go near the pagoda and pour water over statues of buddha while other people kneel in front praying or chanting. And then around the main pagoda is loads of mini temples and buildings to admire, while around you is just the feeling of pure calm. It's something I've never witnessed and probably never will again but everyone there is just peaceful either praying, chanting or just walking around. We just sat for a good hour enjoying the surroundings. Can definitely see why it's a top sight.
Once we realised we couldn't sit there all day, we got back on the bus, and headed towards food haha. As we got off the bus a man asked where we were going so we told him an he told us to Follow him and he just walked us not of the way there and then told us which way to go next and then he just walked away.
The people here are just so helpful and want nothing in return. They literally do everything they can to make us feel welcome and help us find our way.
We found a street stall that had samosas so asked for some of them, and the woman told us to sit down. She chopped the samosas up, then some pakora/Bhaji things, and then put herbs, spices and veg in with it and then covered in a curried soup. It was really good and cost like 30p!!!
By this point it was time to head for our night bus to Mandalay, so we went to get our bags from the hostel and met a girl called Andrea who was heading to Mandalay aswell. But she ended up being with a different bus company so we lost her at the bus station.
On the bus, we got free coffee, Swiss roll things, a pillow and a bottle of water.
This bus journey was really good and not too cold but for most of the night they blared out Burmese music and some film that everyone on the bus found hilarious and it looked like children's entertainment, they've probably never seen real comedy!! I didn't sleep much :(
